Trump World: Trade and the Prime enemy. Immigrants and Stormy weather. Never a dull day with Donald Trump.
As trade talks falter and the US economy is beginning to tremble, President Trump announced that his administration will impose 10 percent tariffs on an additional $300 billion worth of Chinese imports.
The news rattled the stock market.
Trump tweeted, “We thought we had a deal with China three months ago, but sadly, China decided to re-negotiate the deal prior to signing.” Last night at a rally in Cincinnati Trump said of Chinese leaders, “They would like to see a new president in a year and a half so they could continue to rip off the United States like they’ve been doing for the last 25 years.”
Trump likes to thump his own chest bit some other thumping was going on.A scuffle broke out in the crowd waiting for Trump before the rally. Protesters held up a sign saying “immigrants built America” and Trump supporters tried to rip the sign out of their hands. Immigrants probably built the stage, too.
In what appears to be an act of revenge against one of President Trump’s favorite enemies, the Pentagon is delaying the award of a $10 billion computing services contract that was expected to go to Amazon Web Services, a division of the Amazon shopping website that also owns The Washington Post.
Trump hates Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the Post, which has dogged him with truth during his Presidency.
The Pentagon has been looking to update its woefully aging and incompatible computer systems. But Trump, who has denounced Bezos, The Post, and Amazon, has openly questioned why Amazon should profit while being what he believes to be an opponent of his administration. It is highly unusual for a president to intervene in a government contract for political reasons.
In New York, the Manhattan district attorney’s office has subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents related to money that had been used to buy off Stormy Daniels, the porn actress who said she had an affair with Donald Trump. They want to know whether company executives filed false financial reports.
The Diminishing Crowd:With stricter requirements set by the Democratic National Committee, so far only seven of 20 candidates for President qualify for the next round of debates in September. The candidates will need 130,000 unique donors and have at least 2 percent support in four polls.
The short list at the moment is:
-Former Vice President Joe Biden
-Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey
-Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind.
-Sen. Kamala Harris of California
-Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas
-Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont
-Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts
The Roundup:Rep. Will Hurd of Texas, the only black Republican in the House, announced that he would not run re-election next year. This is a concern to Republican leaders who would like to take back the House in 2020. Hurd is the sixth House Republican in the past two weeks call it quits. — A 22-year-old granddaughter of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy died of a suspected drug overdose in a house at the Kennedy family compound on Cape Cod. The house belongs to Ethel Kennedy, 91, Senator Kennedy’s widow. The dead woman, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill. She had written about struggling with depression.
News from the 16thCentury:Saudi Arabia announced new laws that will allow any citizen — and that means women as well — to apply for a passport and travel freely, ending the long-standing requirement that a woman must have permission from a man to travel or carry a passport.
Previously, Saudi law has treated women like the ward of men throughout their adult lives. Why women have been treated this way is a mystery because everyone wears a dress in that country.
