Man With a Gun, New Trade War

Locked Out:The Rooney Report has returned to press a day early because the water on the Champlain Canal is high and the locks are closed. Too much water to float a raft or anything else. We’ll try again, but in the meantime there’s plenty happening.

The Gun Beat:The man who shot and killed 12 people at a Virginia Beach government complex Friday was DeWayne Craddock , 40, a longtime public employee who had been an engineer with the Department of Public Utilities. Craddock was killed in a shootout with the police.

Craddock was still employed by the city and witnesses said nothing seemed wrong as he entered the building. One anonymous city official told The NY Timesthat Craddock had recently begun to behave strangely and had gotten into scuffles with other employees.  He was armed with two legally-bought .45 caliber pistols, one of them equipped with a silencer and both with extended magazines that held more than the usual number of bullets.

Eleven of the dead were city employees and one was a contractor filing for a permit. One employee had been with the city for 41 years and another just 11 months. One woman had three daughters, the youngest just 15 months.

A Quiet Week in Lake Woebegone: President Trump opened a second diplomatic-trade war this past week, this time with Mexico.

Thursday night Trump announced on Twitterthat starting June 10 he would use emergency powers to impose a 5 percent tariff on Mexican goods and increase that amount to as much as 25 percent “until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied.”

Trump wants Mexico to stem the tide of migrants passing through the the US southern border.

He did this despite advice from senior members of the administration that it would disrupt the economies of both countries and raise the price of Mexican goods in the US — everything from avocadoes to cars. But he had the support of his immigration Robespierre, Stephen Miller.

Mexico immediately sent emissaries to Washington to negotiate.

Trump believes the tariffs will motivate companies that crossed the border to move back north to the states. He was busy tweeting this morning that, “Either they stop the invasion of our Country by Drug Dealers, Cartels, Human Traffickers … Coyotes and Illegal Immigrants, which they can do very easily, or our many companies and jobs that have been foolishly allowed to move South of the Border, will be brought back into the United States through taxation (Tariffs). America has had enough!”

Public Morals:Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence tweeted, “A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children.”

Veteran journalist Jeff Greenfield picked up on this and said, “The cluelessness of this Tweet, given what we have learned about where children have been harmed, is world historical.”

The Obit Page:Claus von Bülow the Danish-British socialite  convicted and then acquitted  in the 1980s of attempting to kill his rich wife in a case that made headlines for years, has died at home in London at age  92. Von Bülow was accused in Rhode Island of trying to kill his wife Sonny by injecting her with insulin to aggravate her low blood sugar. She ended up in an irreversible coma.

In a splashy trial in their adopted home state of Rhode Island, von Bülow was first found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in prison, but later cleared on appeal when he was  represented by the famous lawyer Alan Dershowitz.

Von Bülow had an icy, imperturbable manner. The running joke at the time; Q. What’s the temperature in Rhode Island.? A. It’s von Bülow.

—  The wonderfully laconic folk singer Leon Redbone has died at age 69. He was a self-taught musician whose low baritone was soothing. He sometimes did voice over work. Listen to his rendition of  “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”

Friendly Fire:When  you go to war it’s best to shoot the enemy, not yourself. The Twitter  site “TrumpWarRoom” posted that, “Fake News CNN is at it again, falsely claiming President Trump called Meghan Markle ‘nasty.’ Here is what he actually said. Listen for yourself!”

Then they posted the audio of a journalist’s interview with the President.

     Q.  “She said she would move to Canada if you got elected. It turns out she moved to Britain.”

Q.  “She said she would move to Canada if you got elected. It turns out she moved to Britain.”

A. “I didn’t know that she was nasty.”

This morning, Trump tweeted, “I never called Meghan Markle ‘nasty.’”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
