EternalBlue:For nearly three weeks it’s been impossible in the city of Baltimore to close a real estate deal or deal with a water bill. Government email and voicemail isn’t working. Cyber extortionists have frozen the city’s computer systems and they’re demanding a ransom paid in Bitcoin.
Now The NY Timesreports that Baltimore as well as other governments and entities have been attacked with a cyber weapon known as EternalBlue, developed at and stolen from the National Security Administration just down the highway. Computer experts say the program has been used by state hackers in North Korea, Russia, and China, leaving billions of dollars in damage around the world.
It’s been used to attack hospitals, airports, shipping operators, ATMs and factories. Particularly vulnerable are cities with aging computer systems that have not been updated or inoculated from malware. That’s Baltimore.
The Trumpster Fire:When you are a Republican an “activist” judge is one who rules against you. President Trump is angry that a federal judge in California blocked his money grab to build a wall on portions of the southern border. Trump tweeted, “Another activist Obama appointed judge has just ruled against us on a section of the Southern Wall that is already under construction. This is a ruling against Border Security and in favor of crime, drugs and human trafficking.”
It was actually a ruling in favor of the constitutional balance of power between the President and Congress, which has the sole authority to say how the money is spent.
Trump was in Japan yesterday golfing with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. While dealing with Japan trade issues, Trump chose his visit to fire off a tweet about North Korea, Japan’s close neighbor. Trump said he wasn’t worried about the North’s recent missile tests and “I have confidence that Chairman Kim will keep his promise to me, & also smiled when he called Swampman Joe Biden a low IQ individual, & worse. Perhaps that’s sending me a signal?”
Only Trump would pick sides with a murderous dictator over a former senator and vice president of his own country.
Today he tweeted, “Numerous Japanese officials told me that the Democrats would rather see the United States fail than see me or the Republican Party succeed – Death Wish!”
Now really, does anyone believe that even a single Japanese official said that?
Speech to the Graduates:West Point graduated its most diverse class in history, including 223 women, 34 of them black.
Speaking to the class of 980 cadets who will become second lieutenants in the Army, Vice President Mike Pence said, “It is a virtual certainty that you will fight on a battlefield for America at some point in your life.”
Nice sendoff.
The News Roundup:Voters in the Republic of Ireland decided by more than 82 percent to loosen up their divorce laws. Divorce was made legal only in 1995 and now voters have removed the requirement that couples must be separated for four of the previous five years to divorce. — The death toll on Mt. Everest this season is now 10. — The attorneys general for 47 states have written to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos asking her to forgive student loans for disabled veterans.
Predictable Plot: Critics at the Cannes Film Festival walked out on the screening of a movie called Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo because it contained a long and graphic sex scene between a man and a woman and everybody already knows how that ends.
