China Ratchets Tariffs, Varsity Blues

President Trump’s chief economic adviser contradicted the President on Fox News yesterday, admitting that not just China but the US will suffer in the trade war between the two countries. Larry Kudlow said, “In fact, both sides will pay. Both sides will suffer on this.”

President Trump has portrayed his punishing tariffs on Chinese goods as a great thing for America, but it’s American buyers of Chinese goods who pay the added tariffs.

Trump tweeted yesterday, “We are right where we want to be with China.” He said,  “We will be taking in Tens of Billions of Dollars in Tariffs from China.”

This morning he elaborated, revealing that he doesn’t understand tariffs or grammar, “Their is no reason for the U.S. Consumer to pay the Tariffs, which take effect on China today. This has been proven recently when only 4 points were paid by the U.S., 21 points by China because China subsidizes product to such a large degree.”

  Does anyone understand that?

One of the big obstacles to reaching a deal is China’s insistence on subsidizing its technology industries of the future; computer chips, robotics, and commercial aircraft. What has to play out here is who reaches their pain threshold first, China or its American customers.

Kudlow wasn’t saying he’s opposed to the tariffs.“You’ve got to do what you got to do,” he said. “We have had unfair trading practices all these years and so in my judgment, the economic consequences are so small that the possible improvement in trade and exports and open markets for the United States, this is worthwhile doing.”

The Wall:About $1.5 billion of the “emergency” money for President Trump’s border wall will come from programs that include the military’s next nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile and a plane that provides surveillance and communications to airborne fighter jets, according to a document obtained by The Washington Post.

The Pentagon position is that it will take money from the wall only from programs that are early in their development or not vital to national defense.

Wikicase:Sweden announced today that it is reopening a rape case against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who is jailed in England for jumping bail. This may complicate the US effort to extradite Assange to face charges for his part in publishing a trove of classified information.

Varsity Blues:Actress Felicity Huffman is scheduled to plead guilty today to paying  $15,000 to bump up  her daughter’s SAT score to get her into college.

The star of “Desperate Housewives” is among 14 parents who have agreed to plead guilty in the college admissions payoff scandal. Actress Lori Loughlin is rolling the dice and sticking with a not guilty plea.

Prosecutors say they will seek four to 10 months in prison for Huffman. She’ll be a real desperate housewife when that happens.

Police Blotter:Federal authorities arrested a Cape Cod man after one person was killed and several wounded by an attacker wielding a machete on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. One woman walked six miles while bleeding before she was found.— A flight that was to take off from Louisville over the weekend was delayed then cancelled after the pilot was arrested. Christian Martin, a pilot for a subsidiary of American Airlines, is accused of killing a Kentucky couple and their neighbor in 2015. His mugshot was taken in his flight uniform.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
