Above the Law: In a letter obtained by The NY Times, President Trump’s lawyers argued to the special counsel that it is a logical impossibility for the president to obstruct justice in the Russian influencing investigation.

The letter says the President’s actions “By virtue of his position as the chief law enforcement officer, could neither constitutionally nor legally constitute obstruction because that would amount to him obstructing himself, and that he could, if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon if he so desired.”

It’s a little unclear whether they suggest Trump could pardon himself, but the thought is hauntingly similar to Richard Nixon’s famous line, “When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.”

The 20-page letter written Jan. 29^th claims corruption in the FBI and that the President cannot be easily compelled to sit for an interview. It says, “under our system of government, the President is not readily available to be interviewed.”

The letter also acknowledges, despite public denials, that President Trump dictated the letter covering for his son about the meeting he had with a Russian lawyer dealing dirt of Hillary Clinton. It says, “You have received all of the notes, communications and testimony indicating that the President dictated a short but accurate response to the New York Times article on behalf of his son, Donald Trump, Jr.”

Letters from Camp Grenada: Hello Muddah, hello Faddah. The President was alone in the woods of Camp David over the weekend tweeting his grievances. To wit:

Trade … “When you’re almost 800 Billion Dollars a year down on Trade, you can’t lose a Trade War! The U.S. has been ripped off by other countries for years on Trade, time to get smart!”

The Russia Investigation “There was No Collusion with Russia (except by the Democrats). When will this very expensive Witch Hunt Hoax ever end? So bad for our Country. Is the Special Counsel/Justice Department leaking my lawyers letters to the Fake News Media? Should be looking at Dems corruption instead?”

Nation: Two climbers in their 40s fell to their deaths yesterday from the sheer face of Yosemite’s El Capitan. There was no immediate explanation for the accident, but death on El Capitan is not uncommon.

True Crime: First came the murder of a noted forensic psychiatrist outside his office. Less than 24 hours later, two paralegals were killed. In a spree of the kind that spawns books, Arizona investigators say the three murders are related.

On Thursday 59-year-old Dr. Steven Pitt, known for his work on high-profile cases like the murder of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey and the Columbine High School massacre, was shot dead leaving his Scottsdale office building about 5:30 pm. Witnesses said they had heard an argument before the gunshot.

On Friday a woman with what turned out to be a fatal head wound approached a bus to ask for help before she collapsed. Police followed a blood trail to a nearby business where they found another woman, dead.

The two were identified as Veleria Sharp, 48, and Laura Anderson, 49, both of them paralegals at a law firm.

The police have described their suspect as a bald, white male wearing a dark-colored hat with a short brim, “kind of like a fedora.” They haven’t said how the murders are connected, but this is an unfolding tale.

The Sports Page: The Washington Capitals beat Las Vegas 3-1 last night to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup finals. It was the first time the Caps won a Stanley Cup game at home and the crowd went wild. — Game two of the NBA finals  is tonight. The Golden State warriors have a great team and Cleveland has LeBron James carrying a bunch of other guys.

Sign Off on That: The NY Times published a story about the cozy relationship between a billionaire coal baron and Scott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Coal man Joseph W. Craft III, is campaigning to reverse the Obama administration’s environmental crackdown on the coal.

The Washington Post reports that Pruitt, the big spender and egotist, spent $1,560 of government money on a dozen custom fountain pens featuring the EPA seal and Pruitt’s signature. So not only is the administration trying to bring back coal, they want to return to the age of fountain pens.
