Syria:  Congress returns Sept. 9^th to consider President Obama’s request for approval to strike Syria. The President said yesterday he feels justified ordering action himself but thinks Congress should participate in the decision. “Here’s my question for every member of Congress and every member of the global community:  What message will we send if a dictator can gas hundreds of children to death in plain sight and pay no price?” Mr. Obama said US forces are ready to strike tomorrow, but it could be next week, or a month from now. He described his plan for attack as limited in duration and scope, and promised no “boots on the ground”.

The Obit Page: British journalist David Frost, best known for interviewing Former President Richard Nixon, died yesterday of an apparent heart attack at age 74 aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship. He was scheduled to make a speech when he was stricken.

Gridiron Blues: New England Patriot quarterback Tim Tebow yesterday was thrown for what may be the loss of his career when he was cut from the squad. Tebow is known as much for kneeling and praying, “Teebowing”, as he is for throwing the ball. This may be the end of the line for the left-hander who was a college star but can’t seem to plant his feet in the NFL.

Bum Steer: Ford is recalling 370,000 cars built between 2005 and 2011 because of corrosion in the lower steering shaft. The models include the Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and the Lincoln Town Car.

In Deep: Peru has declared a state of emergency after unusually low temperatures and heavy snowfall have crippled wide regions of the country. Tens of thousands of llamas, alpacas, cattle and sheep have frozen to death and farmers are reported to be in trouble.

In Deeper: Diana Nyad, the 64-year-old endurance swimmer, is making her third attempt in four years to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Nyad entered the water yesterday and expects to take 80 hours to swim the 110 miles to Key West. Her last attempt was defeated by jellyfish stings, but this time she’s wearing a full protective body suit.

Still Deeper: Diggers have found human bones on the grounds of an old Florida reform school where for many years boys simply disappeared. The Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys operated for 111 years and closed only in 2011. Former students have described brutal beatings and said they were told the boys who disappeared had escaped, gone home or were transferred. Many are believed to be buried on school property.
