Disturbing the Peace: Palestinians called for “three days of rage” after President Trump yesterday called world leaders to tell them he plans to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the US Embassy there from Tel Aviv. It’s something every country in the world has avoided doing to keep relative peace with the Palestinians.

Trump called Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who tried to talk him out of it, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who was said to have lobbied with other leaders to sway Trump not to do it.

King Abdullah issued a statement saying, “Jerusalem is the key to achieving peace and stability in the region and the world.”

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called it “a fatal mistake” that would spark fresh conflict in the Middle East.

Israel’s government is in West Jerusalem and the Palestinians hope East Jerusalem will be the capital of a Palestinian state. Jerusalem’s Old City is also the location of some of the most sacred sites in the Jewish and Muslim worlds.

The President repeatedly promised during his campaign that he would do this. He’s expected to make his decision official today.

By the Numbers: The latest Gallup poll says Trump’s approval rating is 35 percent, and his disapproval is at 60. The Quinnipiac poll is close with disapproval at 58 percent.

Quinnipiac says approval of the Republican tax plan is just 29 percent, and disapproval is 53.

Four Rings: The International Olympic Committee has banned Russia from the 2018 winter Olympics in South Korea because of systematic state-sponsored doping, which was exposed after the 2014 Sochi games. The scheme involved taking control of the Sochi doping lab and switching out urine samples of Russian athletes who were juiced.

The banning of a whole country is unprecedented in the history of the modern Olympics. The Russian Olympic Committee was also fined $15 million. Wonder where that will go in the corrupt IOC. There aren’t any urine tests that detect payoffs.

Anyway, the Russian flag will not be displayed and its national anthem will not be played in South Korea. Government officials will be barred from attending. Individual athletes might be invited to compete, but not in the name of their home country.

The Russia Thing: Several news outlets report that the Special Counsel’s office subpoenaed Trump business records from Deutche Bank which has lent the Trump Organization hundreds of millions of dollars.  Deutche Bank is one of few major lenders willing to loan money to the Trumps after a string of bankruptcies.

The reports say investigators want to know whether Deutche Bank sold the Trump loans to a Russian bank.

Trump’s personal lawyer, Jay Sekulow, says  Deutche Bank confirmed to him that they received no such subpoena.

California Burning: Three destructive wildfires driven by warm Santa Ana winds are still burning out of control in Los Angeles and Ventura counties in California. Close to 200 homes and buildings have burned. Thousands of people have evacuated their homes and Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency.

Let Them Eat Cake: Justice Anthony Kennedy appears to be the swing vote in a case the Supreme Court heard yesterday on whether a Colorado baker has the right to refuse to make a custom wedding cake for a same-sex couple.

Jack Phillips told the couple they could buy a pre-baked cake, but his religious beliefs prevent him from baking a custom cake that in effect endorses gay marriage. He says his custom cakes are “works of art” and the law cannot control his artistic creations.

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission ruled in favor of the couple.

Kennedy, who asked questions that appeared to support both sides, said, “Tolerance is essential in a free society. It seems to me that the state in its position here has neither been tolerant nor respectful of Mr. Phillips’s religious beliefs.”

This is a huge case for the religious freedom movement. The Court could make a decision or send it back to the civil rights commission.

La Migra: Border Patrol arrests have plunged to a 45-year low while immigration arrests have spiked by 25 percent in the last year, according to the federal government.

It seems to be an indication that a crackdown on illegal immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement has discouraged people from trying to illegally enter the country. The Border Patrol polices the border while ICE goes after people already in the country.

Elaine Duke, acting secretary of Homeland Security said, “We have clearly seen the successful results of the president’s commitment to supporting the frontline officers and agents of as they enforce the law and secure our borders.”

The Weinstein Effect: Amid sexual harassment accusations, Michigan Rep. John Conyers announced yesterday that he will leave Congress immediately and said he hopes his 26-year-old son, John Conyers III, would be named to replace him. As its longest serving member, Conyers has been referred to as the “Dean of the House.”
