Climate March and The Snake

March in April: Thousands of people worried about climate change and the environment under the policies of the Trump administration marched in Washington and all over the country yesterday.

In Washington, The People’s Climate March gathered at the Capitol and marched to the White House where they let out a collective roar to get the attention of President Trump and his administration. They took up a chant, “Resistance is here to stay, welcome to your 100th day.”

Fake President: Disappointed with journalistic reviews of his first 100 days in office, President Trump tweeted yesterday, “Mainstream (FAKE) media refuses to state our long list of achievements, including 28 legislative signings, strong borders & great optimism!”

Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway wrote in USA Today, “A recent study found that 89 percent of the broadcast media’s coverage of President Trump has been negative, even as objective measures indicate that Americans are feeling extraordinarily optimistic with President Trump at the helm.” Those are the same Americans who have given Trump the lowest approval of any new president since polling began.

Permawar: An American service member was killed by an explosion in the fight to retake the city of Mosul. Yesterday’s death was the third for the US in the past week. The Pentagon now says that two Army Rangers killed last Wednesday night during a raid in Afghanistan may have been the victims of friendly fire. The Pentagon said the two Rangers may have been hit by fire either from American troops or Afghan commandos.

The Nerd Prom: The White House Correspondents Association held its annual dinner last night without President Trump. It’s customary for the president to attend and take some ribbing, but Trump was holding a fan rally in Harrisburg, Pa. last night, where he once again attacked the press.

He told the crowd, “Their priorities are not my priorities, and not your priorities.” He went on, “If the media’s job is to be honest and tell the truth, the media deserves a very, very big fat failing grade.”

In his remarks at the press dinner, association President Jeff Mason said, “We are not fake news. We are not failing news organizations, and we are not the enemy of the American people.” Everyone at the dinner was given a pin that said simply, “First Amendment.”

The Snake: Last night in Harrisburg, President Trump read aloud the poem “The Snake” as a metaphor for illegal immigration. The poem tells about a woman who finds a beautiful snake freezing to death and begs to be taken in and rescued. When it’s healthy again, the snake bites the woman. So that’s what Trump thinks about illegal immigrants.

Thin Air: The spring mountain climbing season in Nepal has its first casualty. Famed Swiss climber Ueli Steck was killed today in an accident near Mount Everest.  Steck died at Camp 1 of Mount Nuptse. He was planning to climb Mount Everest and nearby Mount Lhotse next month.

The Sports Page: Anthony Joshua scored a knockout against Wladimir Klitschko last night in London’s Wembley Stadium. Joshua, 27, twice knocked down the 41-year-old Klitschko and the referee stopped the fight. The win makes Joshua the WBA and IBF boxing champion. He is now 19-0 with 19 knockouts and might make boxing interesting again.

Klitschko, who’s getting to be a bit old for this sort of thing, is the mate of “Nashville” actress Hayden Panettiere, who also does her part to make boxing more interesting.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
