California Dam Danger, Just Make It Up

Spillway: As many as 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate downstream from Northern California’s giant Oroville dam after the discovery of a hole in an auxiliary spillway used to lower the level of the brimming Lake Oroville.

If the leak gets out of control it threatens to flood Oroville and other towns in Yuba, Sutter and Butte counties.

The auxiliary spillway is not paved, but the primary spillway, which is lined with concrete, also is damaged. After a series of winter storms, dam managers are trying to lower the level of the lake by 50 feet. They say the dam itself is not in danger

Top Gun: White house adviser Stephen Miller, one of the most contentious of President Trump’s close circle, went on Sunday talk shows yesterday to combatively defended the President’s blocked immigration order and continue spouting the fiction that Trump performance at the polls was undercut by illegal voting.

“I want to say something very clearly, and this is going to be very disappointing to the people protesting the president and the people in Congress, like [Senate Democratic Leader Charles] Schumer, who have attacked the president for his lawful and necessary action: The president’s powers here are beyond question,” Miller said on Fox News.

On ABC News, Miller said, “A district judge in Seattle cannot force the president of the United States to change our laws and our Constitution because of their own personal views. The president has the power … to suspend the entry of aliens when it’s in the national interest.”

Miller repeated claims Trump has made that he narrowly lost the general election in New Hampshire because thousands of Massachusetts residents were bused into New Hampshire to vote illegally.

“I can tell you that this issue of busing voters into New Hampshire is widely known by anyone who’s worked in New Hampshire politics,” Miller said. “It’s very real. It’s very serious.”

There’s no evidence that it happened.

He told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “It is a fact — and you will not deny it — that there are massive numbers of noncitizens in this country who are registered to vote.”

Again, there’s no evidence of it.

Insecurity: With National Security adviser Michael Flynn under examination for unauthorized conversation with the Russian ambassador before the inauguration, The NY Times reports that the National Security Council is in turmoil. The paper says, “Three weeks into the Trump administration, council staff members get up in the morning, read President Trump’s Twitter posts and struggle to make policy to fit them. Most are kept in the dark about what Mr. Trump tells foreign leaders in his phone calls. Some staff members have turned to encrypted communications to talk with their colleagues, after hearing that Mr. Trump’s top advisers are considering an ‘insider threat’ program that could result in monitoring cellphones and emails for leaks.”

Small Statues: British singer Adele won five Grammys last night, including the awards for album, record, and song of the year. She’s the first musician to win those three twice. Her song of the year, “Hello,” was deliciously skewered on “Saturday Night Live.”

World: It’s hot, flaming and smoky in Australia. Nearly 100 wildfires are burning  in New South Wales, about a third of them uncontrolled. Air temperatures have reached 113.

The Obit Page: Al Jarreau, the singer who bridged pop, jazz, and R&B, has died at age 76. He left his tour two weeks ago and checked into a hospital suffering what was described as exhaustion.

Jarreau reached a national audience with his album “We Got By,” released in 1975. He went on to win six Grammy Awards in a several categories of music.

He wrote the theme song for the popular 1980s television series “Moonlighting.” His most familiar song was probably “We’re In This Love Together.” He had a beautiful voice.

What Your President Said: Demonstrating his desperate need to be loved, President Trump tweeted yesterday, “Just leaving Florida. Big crowds of enthusiastic supporters lining the road that the FAKE NEWS media refuses to mention. Very dishonest!”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
