Charges May Follow Fire, Rumors and Security

Ghost Ship: The Alameda County prosecutor says charges of murder or manslaughter may result from the warehouse fire that killed at least 36 people over the weekend in Oakland, Calif.

“It’s too premature to say where the investigation will lead us,” District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said. “We are going to be looking at everything.”

Police said people trapped in the building texted friends and family saying, “I’m going to die,” and “I love you.” The 36 people killed ranged in age from 17 to late 30s.

Recovery teams are still looking for bodies. The building had no sprinkler system and was not permitted for use as living space, although people did live there.

Former resident Shelley Mack said, “We used massive amounts of electricity, all of it coming from power cords.” She said, “We’d smell burning and we’d have to go look where it was burning.” The wires were draped over the back stairway.

Dakota Access: Protesters blocking the Dakota Access Pipeline fear their victory-may be short lived. The company building the pipeline, Energy Transfer Partners, says it intends to complete the pipeline on its planned route, even though the Army Corps of Engineers has denied a vital permit. Once he’s president, Donald Trump might reverse the order.

No Confidence: Texas elector Christopher Suprun, a Republican, writes in an op-ed in the NY Times that he will not cast his vote for Donald Trump. “I am asked to cast a vote on Dec. 19 for someone who shows daily he is not qualified for the office.”

National Insecurity: Among Americans re-tweeting conspiracy theories spawned by fake news websites is Donald Trump’s choice for national security adviser. Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn re-tweeted a link on Nov. 2, saying, “U decide – NYPD Blows Whistle on New Hillary Emails: Money Laundering, Sex Crimes w Children, etc…MUST READ!”

Flynn’s people say he was not referring to the fake story that Hillary Clinton and her campaign manager were running a child sex ring out of the back of a Washington, DC restaurant, named Comet Ping Pong but really, is there a difference?

Over the weekend, a North Carolina man went to the DC pizzeria armed with an assault rifle and a pistol to personally investigate Hillary Clinton’s child sex ring. After firing one shot, he found nothing and was arrested.

Evidently Gen. Flynn buys into some of this conspiracy stuff, and so does his son, Michael Flynn, Jr., who is his chief of staff. The younger Flynn tweeted on Sunday, “Until #Pizzagate proven to be false, it’ll remain a story. The left seems to forget #PodestaEmails and the many ‘coincidences’ tied to it.”

As national security adviser, Gen. Flynn’s job will be to know the difference between real threats and internet memes.

Inconvenient Truth: Former Vice President Al Gore, who won an Oscar for his 2006 documentary about global warming, went to Trump Tower to meet with Ivanka Trump yesterday and ended up spending 90 minutes with the president-elect, who has said global warming is a hoax perpetrated by China.  Gore told reporters as he left, “I had a lengthy and very productive session with the president-elect. It was a sincere search for areas of common ground.”

Nation: The judge in the murder trial of a white former South Carolina police officer who shot an unarmed black man in the back has declared a mistrial after one juror refused to vote “guilty.” Michael Slager is expected to be tried again. — Suburban Atlanta father Justin Harris was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his 22-month-old son, who he left in a hot car for seven hours. Prosecutors argued that Harris intentionally killed his son to be free of the responsibility of fatherhood.

The Queen’s Knees: Researchers say they have confirmed that a pair of mummified knees found in a plundered tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Queens in 1904 are those of Queen Nefertari. She was known for her great beauty and we assume the knees were more fetching when she was alive.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
