“Extreme Vetting,” No Nation Building

It’s Political: Sticking to the script of a major foreign policy speech in Youngstown, Ohio yesterday, Donald Trump called for an end to “nation-building” and for “extreme, extreme vetting” of foreigners who enter the US.

“If I become president, the era of nation building will be brought to a quick and very swift end,” Trump said. He also said he would join with the military of any country, including Russia, to fight international terrorism. “Any country that shares this goal will be our allies,” Trump said. “We can never choose our friends, but we can never fail to recognize our enemies.”

Trump is not the first candidate to deride “nation building.” George W. Bush made the same promise, invaded Iraq, toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan, and became the most expensive nation builder of all time.

On immigration and foreign visitation, Trump said he would at least temporarily stop immigration from countries troubled by terrorism, and that he would impose an ideological test for people entering the US. “Those who do not believe in our Constitution, or who support bigotry and hatred, will not be admitted for immigration into the country.” Trump said.

Regular Joe: Speaking in Scranton, Penn., before Trump’s appearance, Vice President Joe Biden said Trump presents a national security threat to the US even as he campaigns for president. He said it’s scary to think of Trump having the nuclear codes. “He is not qualified to know the code. He can’t be trusted.”

Biden said that during his upcoming trip to Kosovo and Serbia he will assure NATO allies of the US commitment. Trump has said he wouldn’t defend them unless they had paid their dues. “This guy’s shame has no limits,” Biden said.

Nation: Floodwaters were still rising in Louisiana yesterday after 25 inches of rainfall over the weekend. At least seven people are dead and 12,000 were staying in shelters. The high water crested in Baton Rouge, but was rising to the south.

>Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, 50, was found guilty yesterday of nine charges including perjury and criminal conspiracy after leaking grand jury information to discredit a political rival. The judge said, “There is to be absolutely no retaliation of any kind against any witness in this case, either by your own devices, from your own mouth or your hand, or directing anybody to do anything. Is that clear Ms. Kane?”

>A 35-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with the murder of a Queens, NY, imam and his assistant. The police have not identified a motive.

Money, Money: US stocks closed at record highs yesterday. Feel rich?

The Games: Simone Biles slipped on the balance beam and fell to third place in the event. — Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas actually dove across the finish line to win the women’s 400 meter run.

Small Screen: Comedy Central is cancelling “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” because it’s just never caught enough audience. The world of late night comedy and satire is somewhat adrift without Jon Stewart in the midst of the most humor-prone national election in modern history. Wilmore was great as Stewart’s “Senior Black Correspondent,” but doesn’t quite carry a whole show. His last is Thursday.

Unattended Baggage: The mother of US soccer player Carli Lloyd quickly dropped her suitcase onboard a cruise ship where she was staying for the Rio Olympics and ran off to a game. She thought her bag would be placed in her room. It wasn’t. When she returned, security brought her into a room and showed her the charred remains of her bag and clothing. They had feared it was a bomb and blew it up. Lloyd said, “Some of the clothes were salvageable, but some were melted. Some had holes. My American flag was melted. And all the toiletries with caps had their caps blown off.”

Maybe she forgot to tip the porter.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
