Obama at Hiroshima, Trump Hits Number

Ground Zero: President Obama today stood in front of the iconic domed building at the center of the atomic blast that leveled Hiroshima, Japan in an appearance that was conciliatory, but not apologetic for the US dropping the bomb. The president laid a wreath at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

Obama said, “Technological progress without an equivalent progress in human institutions can doom us.” Afterwards the president met some of the few remaining survivors, including a 91-year-old man who was reluctant to let go of Obama’s hand.

Over the Top: After declaring that he has lined up enough delegates to take the Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump taunted his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. “Here I am watching Hillary fight, and she can’t close the deal,” Trump said in North Dakota. “We’ve had tremendous support from almost everybody.”

The Associated Press and CNN yesterday both reported that Trump has the delegates. Their count includes uncommitted delegates who say they will vote for the presumptive nominee. According to AP, Trump has 1,238 delegates, just one more than the minimum, and CNN says the number is 1,237.

The assignment of another 300 delegates will be determined June 7, when California and four other states hold primaries.

Burn Baby, Burn: In a scripted speech at an oil industry conference in North Dakota, Trump announced that under his administration the US would drill and dig for more fossil fuels and cancel the 2015 Paris agreement, which committed nearly every civilized nation on earth to reducing greenhouse gases and fighting climate change. He promised to restore jobs in coal mining, even though the market for coal is shrinking, and revive the Keystone XL pipeline that was proposed to bring oil from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

Of the Paris climate agreement, Trump claimed, “This agreement gives foreign bureaucrats control over how much energy we use on our land, in our country. No way.”

And by the way, it’s not true.

Surf City: Polling in California shows that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are running a statistical dead heat, within the margin of error, in that state’s Democratic primary. The Public Policy Institute of California has it Clinton 46 percent, Sanders 42 percent.

Feeling the heat from Bernie, Clinton is once again running television ads, which she had almost completely stopped after wins in the Mid-Atlantic States. Clinton can still win the nomination, even if she loses California, but it would be a politically thin victory that would encourage Bernie Sanders to carry his fight to the convention.

Hoop Dreams: The Golden State Warriors, only weeks ago considered a lock for the NBA championship, escaped elimination last night beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 120-111. Golden State is on the ropes, trailing 3-2 in the conference finals.

What Goes Around: Baylor University has removed its president Kenneth Starr and suspended the football coach after the release of a report saying the university has been lax about complaints of sexual harassment and assault. That’s the same Ken Starr who tirelessly investigated Bill Clinton’s sexual improprieties in the White House.

The chairman of Baylor’s Board of Regents said, “We were horrified by the extent of these acts of sexual violence on our campus. This investigation revealed the University’s mishandling of reports in what should have been a supportive, responsive and caring environment for students. The depth to which these acts occurred shocked and outraged us.”

Among other incidents, several accusations of sexual assault have involved the football team. Starr remains, for now, as Baylor’s CEO. According to a statement, football coach Art Briles has been suspended with the intent to fire him.

Under a Spell: The Scripps National Spelling Bee ran out of words again last night, resulting in a tie for the third year in a row. The winners are Nihar Saireddy Janga, 11, of Austin, Tex., and Jairam Jagadeesh Hathwar, of Corning, NY. The winning words were Feldenkrais, and gesellschaft. Look ‘em up.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
