New Taliban Leader, Cosby to Trial
Wednesday, May 25, 2016
Vol. 5, No. 146
New Leadership: The Taliban has admitted that the US drone strike killed their leader and they’ve already named a replacement. Next up in the crosshairs for a drone strike is Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada, a lieutenant to the late Mullah Akhtar Mansour. One of Mansour’s new deputies is Mullah Yaqoub, the son of the previous, and dead, Taliban chief, Mullah Muhammad Omar.
The Campaign: Protesters, some of them carrying banners that read “Trump is Fascist” and “We’ve heard enough” clashed with police outside a Trump rally in Albuquerque last night. The demonstrators knocked over trash cans, and threw burning T-shirts and plastic bottles. The police responded with pepper spray and smoke.
Inside, the man who wants to be president, taunted people who interrupted the rally saying, “Go home to mommy.”
The Coz: For the first time, amid the accusations of many women, comedian Bill Cosby has been ordered to stand trial on charges that he drugged and raped a female acquaintance. Cosby was formally charged last December with raping Andrea Constand, who was then an employee of Cosby’s alma mater, Temple University. Dozens of women have accused the 78-year-old Cosby of doing the same to them. With their criminal complaints too old to prosecute, a handful have sued Cosby for defamation because he called them liars.
Hard Knock Life: Researchers have found that Bubba Smith, the All-Pro defensive lineman, had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the degenerative brain disease caused by repeated knocks to the head. Smith, who died in 2011 at age 66, is the 90th NFL player found to have had CTE. Once a 6’11” terror on the football field, Smith was into the third stage of CTE when he died, suffering cognitive and judgmental impairment.
It isn’t just football. Researchers in Canada have determined that Dave Mirra, the champion BMX bike rider who killed himself in February at age 41, also had CTE.
Permawar: Military forces on several sides are pressing to re-take territory held by the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. About 30,000 Syrian Kurdish fighters with support from the US and help from Russia are moving to take back land north of Raqqa, the unofficial capital of the Islamic State. Iraqi troops have launched an attack on the western city of Fallujah, which is held by ISIS.
Failure to Launch: Young people ages 18-34 are living with their parents at the highest percentage rates in 130 years, according to Pew Research. Thirty-five percent of men in that age bracket, the majority of them with only a high school education, live with Mom and Dad. While there are variations for gender and education, the overall trend is that more young adults are not leaving home. The recession, underemployment, and low pay are making it hard for young Americans to strike out on their own.
Post Time: Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, considered a potential Triple Crown horse before finishing third in the Preakness, will not run in the third event, the Belmont Stakes. Nyquist has a fever and an elevated white blood cell count.
The Real Donald Trump: Four months after he said he had given $1 million to veterans’ charities, and only after being hounded by the press, Donald Trump has handed over the money. Back in January Trump skipped a Republican debate and threw a fundraiser for veterans instead. He said that night that he had raised $6 million and, “Donald Trump gave $1 million.” Neither was true.
A Washington Post reporter writes that, when asked whether he had forked over the money only because reporters kept asking about it, Trump said, “You know, you’re a nasty guy. You’re really a nasty guy. I gave out millions of dollars that I had no obligation to do.”
Panty Lines: The Victoria’s Secret lingerie company announced that it is going to stop producing its printed catalogue because 13-year-old boys can see everything they need to online.
