US Strikes in Libya, Pope v. Trump

Permawar: US warplanes struck an Islamic State camp in Libya today, killing about 30 people. The primary target was a man named Noureddine Chouchane, described as a senior operative in terrorist attacks in Tunisia. It’s unknown yet whether he was killed.

Chouchane is believed to be responsible for the attacks at National Bardo Museum in Tunis that killed 22 people last March and the June massacre of 38 people at a beach resort.

Holy War: Donald Trump, the candidate who will say anything to anyone, is now in a fight with the Pope, who suggested to reporters on the papal airliner yesterday that Trump doesn’t behave like a Christian. “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said.

But the Pope can’t vote and registered Republicans can. Trump fired back, “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.” Trump also said that if the Islamic State ever assaults the Vatican, the Pope will wish Donald Trump had been president. In South Carolina, where the vast majority of Republicans are evangelical Christians, a fight with the Pope might not hurt Trump at all.

Holy Cow: In the same conversation with reporters, Pope Francis broke with church policy saying Catholics could use birth control to avoid spreading and contracting the Zika virus that causes birth defects. “Avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil,” Francis said in a comment that’s a Catholic bombshell.

Catholic advocates of birth control say that at long last it’s a recognition of reality, while traditionalists are appalled. Some observers take it as a sign that Francis wants to loosen church dictates on birth control.

World: Iraq has sentenced 40 members of the Islamic State to death for their part in a massacre of 1,700 police cadets in 2014 at a former US military base. Outrage over the killing of mostly Shia cadets spurred Shia militias to step up the fight against ISIS. The Iraqi military discovered mass graves after re-taking the city of Tikrit last year.

> Colombian authorities are investigating the discovery of 100 dismembered bodies found in the sewer beneath the country’s most notorious prison in Bogota. A special prosecutor said, “The victims were inmates, visitors and people who had nothing to do with the prison. Their remains were thrown into the drain pipes of the sewer system.” No explanation for what that’s all about.

Patriotism: Two of the former occupiers of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon are suing the US government for $666 billion each for “damages from the works of the devil.” Ammon Bundy and Shawna Cox cite “subversive agents” who “secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States.”

The Obit Page: Angela Raiola, the reality television star known as “Big Ang” on VH1’s “Mob Wives,” died yesterday of cancer in New York at age 55. She was a big character and a big woman – 5 foot 10 – with a fondness for plastic surgery. Big Ang was a bartender at the Drunken Monkey on Staten Island and once said, “I’m not here for a long time, I’m   here for a good time!”

Big Ang’s connection to the Mafia; she was the niece of Salvatore “Sally Dogs” Lombardi of the Genovese crime family.

Workplace Safety: California’s worker safety board yesterday rejected a state regulation that would have required porn actors to wear condoms and other sexual safety gear. California is the home of the porn industry and the movie producers complained that they would have ended up making movies no one would want to watch. Evidently the safety board would not have wanted to watch them either.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
