National: House Republicans met privately yesterday and appear to be overwhelmingly against passing the Senate immigration bill that provides a route to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Many think it’s a form of amnesty. House Speaker John Boehner cautioned that doing nothing could weaken Republicans politically. Former President George W. Bush in a speech yesterday, although careful not to stake out a position, urged Congress to deal with immigration reform.
→The details of Saturday’s Asiana air crash in San Francisco keep getting stranger. Flight attendants reported that the pilots delayed giving the order to evacuate the plane for 90 seconds after it came to rest, even while it started to burn. And the pilot flying the plane is reported to have told Korean investigators he was blinded by a flash of light at 500 feet.
→Dzhokhar Tsarnaev appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to all counts in the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured 260. One arm was in a cast.
The Gavel: The George Zimmerman defense rested yesterday without putting the defendant on the stand to testify on his own behalf in his murder trial for the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. It is unusual for a defendant who claims self-defense not to testify. The prosecution presents its closing argument this afternoon, the defense, tomorrow. The judge agreed to let the jury consider second-degree manslaughter in addition to the primary charge of murder.
Train Crash: Twenty people are now confirmed dead and 30 presumed dead in the railroad crash in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec.
Sew: Wal-Mart, The Gap and other North American retailers say they have agreed on a five-year safety plan for Bangladeshi sewing factories. The clothing companies decided they had to do something after 1,129 workers died in a factory collapse in April, and 112 died in a fire last November. The plan involves safety standards and annual inspections.
Ford, Tough: The Ford F-250 pickup has replaced the Cadillac Escalade as the vehicle most likely to be stolen, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute. The Escalade is not considered as cool as it used to be and anti-theft technology has discouraged thieves. Number one stolen vehicle: The F-250 four-wheel-drive crew cab. Woof.
California Fried: Death Valley National Park has issued a plea for visitors to stop frying eggs on the sidewalk. There’s been a rash of egg frying since a staffer posted a video of frying an egg during the recent heat wave. But the park management politely pointed out that she used a pan.
