“Breathtaking Influx,” Speak American

The Great Migration: Germany accepted about 20,000 new migrants over the weekend and an estimated 11,000 more are expected to arrive today. Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that what she describes as the “breathtaking” influx of migrants will “occupy and change” Germany for years. She’s planning to spend about $5.5 billion processing immigrants and building new housing.

Germany has been generous, but other European countries less so. Merkel said it is “time for the European Union to pull its weight.”

Hunter and Hunted: The Minnesota dentist who killed the popular Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe is going back to work and defending his actions. Walter Palmer says he shot the lion legally and didn’t know it was a jungle celebrity. “If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously I wouldn’t have taken it,” Palmer said. “Nobody in our hunting party knew before or after the name of this lion.”  What Palmer still doesn’t seem to understand is that a large part of the world is mystified about why anyone would kill a magnificent animal rather than just consider themselves lucky to see it.

Church v. State: The Kentucky county clerk jailed for contempt of court for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples has appealed on the grounds of denial of due process. The lawyer for Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis said the federal judge in the case was prejudiced with a “previous intention to incarcerate” Davis from the start of her contempt hearing. Davis has refused to issue licenses for religious reasons.

The Gathering Crowd: Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig met his crowd-funding goal of $1 million and declared himself a candidate for president yesterday. Lessig said he’s running on a platform called the Citizen Equality Act of 2017 to expand voting access, ban gerrymandering and institute campaign finance reform. Lessig told ABC News, “We have to find a way to elevate the debate to focus on the changes that would actually get us a government that could work again, that is not captured by the tiniest fraction of the one percent who fund campaigns.” He says that if he were elected and his Citizen Equality Act becomes law, he would immediately resign.

Horse Racing: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders leads Hillary Clinton by 9 points in polling of Democratic voters in New Hampshire, according to an NBC News/Marist Poll. The results were 41 percent Sanders, 32 percent, Clinton. Joe Biden, who hasn’t even entered the race, got 16 percent.

Clinton still leads Sanders in Iowa.

Net, Net: Venus Williams beat Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1 at the US Open, setting herself up to play the best women’s tennis player in the world in the quarterfinals … her younger sister Serena. The sisters play tomorrow night and if Venus wins she’ll bust Serena’s chance of winning the Grand Slam of tennis tournaments. Serena said in an interview, “At least a Williams will be in the semis, so that’s good.”

American Spoken Here: Answering a question from CNN’s Jake Tapper about Jeb Bush speaking Spanish to voters, Alaska’s politico pundit Sarah Palin said, “I think we can send a message and say, ‘You want to be in America, A, you’d better be here legally or you’re out of here. B, when you’re here, let’s speak American. Let’s speak English, and that’s a kind of a unifying aspect of a nation is the language that is understood by all.”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
