Thousands Enter Germany, Tebow Cut Again

The Great Migration: Thousands of migrants have crossed the border from Hungary into Austria in the past 48 hours, many of them on their way to Germany. About 11,000 have already taken trains to Germany.

Migrants from the Middle East are supposed to register for asylum in the first European country they enter, which for Syrians is often Turkey or Greece, but they have moved on into Europe. Hungary tried to block them until relenting this past week.

As many as four million Syrians have left their country since 2011. Germany and Sweden have opened their doors, but with some countries overwhelmed, the European Union so far has failed to agree on a plan for even distribution and absorption of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflict.

Interestingly, although most of the migrants are Muslim, the wealthy Persian Gulf states have taken in very few of them even while they have bankrolled the rebels fighting Syria’s dictator Bashar al Assad.

Fargo: T. Eugene Thompson, a St. Paul lawyer who hired a hit man to kill his wife Carol in 1963 in a messy plot out of a Cohen brothers movie, died at age 88 in Minnesota. Thompson, who was 36 at the time, was convicted of having his wife killed for $1.1 million in insurance so he could be with his 27-year-old former secretary.

The bungling killer beat Mrs. Thompson with a rubber hose and left her for dead in a bathtub, but he was surprised when she came around. He then tried to shoot her with a gun that misfired before stabbing her 50 times. She escaped and died at a hospital.

Thompson spent 19 years in prison and remarried when he got out. His son Jeffrey, who was convinced his father was guilty, is now the chief judge for the southeastern district of Minnesota. Thompson’s paid obituary quoted Oscar Wilde saying, “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.”

Church V. State: About 500 supporters gathered outside a Kentucky jail yesterday where Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis is being held for contempt of court. Refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, she has become a rallying figure for Americans opposed to gay marriage. A banner was placed outside the jail reading “Kim Davis POW.”

The Sports Page: Heisman trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow was thrown for another loss when the Philadelphia Eagles released him last night in the final roster cut before the season opens. Tebow failed to nail down the third string quarterback spot. He has also been let go by Denver, the NY Jets, and New England.

And after suffering a concussion Aug 20th, Washington’s star quarterback Robert G. Griffin III still doesn’t have medical clearance to play and will begin the season as a backup on the bench.

The Obit Page: Ben Kuroki, a Japanese American who served as an air gunner during World War II while thousand of Japanese Americans like him were sent to internment camps, died in California at age 98. In 2005 he was belatedly awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for missions over Europe, North Africa, and Japan. He said, “I had to fight like hell for the right to fight for my own country, and I now feel vindication.”

Bookbeat: Appearing at a Washington book festival to hawk his new book “A Lucky Life Interrupted,” former NBC News anchor Tim Brokaw said, “If I was at ‪NBC News right now leading with‪ Donald Trump every night, I’d call in sick.”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
