Politics: Vice President Joe Biden met quietly with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren in Washington yesterday as he weighs whether to run for president. Warren is seen as an influential democrat and one of the brains of the party. Her support is critical in winning over more liberal voters.

Despite being miles behind in organizing and raising money, Biden would step in as the poll numbers soften for Hillary Clinton and she gets bogged down by her secretary of state email controversy.

DefCon: North Korea has doubled its artillery on the border with the South and most of its submarines have set to sea as negotiators from the two countries try to defuse the latest tension. A South Korean military spokesman said, “This is a typical North Korean tactic of talking on one hand and brandishing military power on the other to try to force their way.”

World: More than 2,000 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya yesterday in one of the biggest scoops in the flow of illegal immigrants from North Africa to Europe. The Italian Navy plucked 507 people from one boat and 432 from another. Nearly 265,000 immigrants escaping Africa have landed mostly in Italy and Greece just this year. An estimated 2,000 have died on the way.

>Seven people were killed yesterday when a British fighter jet taking part in an air show crashed into a highway near the airfield. The Hawker Hunter, a Cold War era jet, was doing loops when it failed to complete the set and dove straight into a busy highway.

And there was another accident today at an air show in Switzerland. One person died when two small planes collided. One of the pilots parachuted safely.

The Happiest Days: The giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth at the National Zoo in Washington yesterday only three days after zookeepers realized she was pregnant. It’s twins! The mother will be given several weeks to take care of the cubs before veterinarians examine the babies. So far, both mother and cubs are said to be doing well. The birth of a healthy panda cub in captivity is rare and few survive.

The Twitter Campaign: Off the campaign stump, the presidential candidates are waging their campaigns 140 characters at a time on Twitter.

Donald Trump is just as blunt in digital as he is in person. “Jeb Bush is weak on illegal immigration, in favor of common core, bad on women’s health issues and thinks the Iraq war was a good thing.”

Jeb Bush, on the other hand, doesn’t seem capable of doing mean as easy as Donald. “His massive inconsistencies aside, ‪@realDonaldTrump’s immigration plan is not conservative and does not reflect our nation’s values.” And getting really down, Jeb says, “Calling it like I see it. ‪@realDonaldTrump is a tax-hiking democrat.” Ooooh.

And here’s Bobby Jindal’s version of tough talk: “At the Iowa State Fair I told pro-amnesty protesters, “If you want freedom, follow the law.” It’s amazing no one thought of that before.

Hillary Clinton is cleaving to the middle class. “When you see that you’ve got CEOs making 300x what the average worker is making, you know the deck is stacked.” And she’s doing a little campaign trinket selling on the side. “Grab the She’s Got Your Back(pack) and gear up for back to school.”

Speaking of himself in the third person, and giving rave reviews, John Kasich says, “Experience. Optimism. Leadership. John Kasich wows the crowd at the ‪@IowaStateFair soapbox.”

And then there’s Chris Christie at the Iowa Fair, perhaps the most straightforward of them all: “Tending bar at Jalapeño Petes! Come on by.”
