Nation: Former President Jimmy Carter revealed that he has advanced cancer that spread from his liver to other parts of his body. The busy 90-year-old Carter said he would alter his schedule to accommodate treatment, but the prognosis is not good.

Jimmy Carter was a one-term president from 1977 to 1981. He’s not the oldest former president … that’s George HW Bush at 91 … but Carter has been out of office the longest. He has dedicated his post-political life to doing good works and has been one of America’s best ex-presidents.

World: Massive explosions leveled a warehouse containing hazardous materials last night in Tianjin, China, killing at least 50 people and injuring 700. With people still reported missing, the death toll is expected to rise. Many of the dead may be firefighters.

The explosions and resulting fire lit up the night sky, blowing out widows in highrise buildings. The impact knocked down temporary worker homes at a nearby construction site, collapsing them on sleeping laborers.

Permawar: The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a truck bomb that tore through a Baghdad market killing at least 62 people in a Shiite neighborhood. They promise more attacks.

The NY Times reports that in addition to such terror attacks, the Islamic State has established a culture of religiously justified rape among its fighters. Through a narrow reading of the Quran, ISIS tells its fighters that raping non-Muslim women in occupied territories will bring them closer to God. Women and girls who have been raped say their assailants pray before and after each assault.

Instant Replay: A day after getting fired by the New York Jets for punching and breaking the jaw of the team’s starting quarterback, linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali has been given a shot with the Buffalo Bills. Coach Rex Ryan, who used to coach the Jets, said, “I recognize it was a mistake, but I also believe he will learn from this. We’ll give him a chance to compete.”

Men With Guns: Patrolling among the protesters in Ferguson, Mo. this week was a group of armed men from a growing patriot group called the Oath Keepers. They tend to dress in special ops chic with baseball caps, sunglasses, and ammo clips strapped to their chests while carrying an assault rifle.

The Oath Keepers were founded in 2009 by Yale Law School graduate Stewart Rhodes, who was a paratrooper and a staffer for Congressman Ron Paul. The group’s website describes it as “a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, police, and first responders, who pledge to fulfill the oath all military and police take to ‘defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’”

The group is out there on the political right with the Tea Party and the “birthers” who believe President Obama is not a US citizen. Rhodes and his followers say they believe the US is on the verge of martial law and suspension of constitutional rule. Part of their pledge is that they will not follow orders they consider unconstitutional.

Ancient History: Egypt’s legendary Queen Nefertiti has been missing since her death more than a thousand years before the birth of Christ, but a scholar from the University of Arizona believes he may have found clues to her burial place in a chamber not far from King Tutankhamen’s tomb. The modest size of Tut’s tomb has always mystified archaeologists, making them wonder if something more is there. Nicholas Reeves from the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona told NPR he could be wrong,

“But if I’m right, we’re now faced with the extraordinary prospect of coming face to face with an intact pharaonic tomb.”
