Final Cut: Republican candidate Rick Perry of Texas didn’t make the final cut for the debate tomorrow night on Fox News. Neither did Rick Santorum, or the only female candidate, Carly Fiorina.
Here’s the roster: Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Chris Christie, and the late entry John Kasich. The candidates were chosen by averaging the results of five major polls.
The Deep: Natalia Molchanova, considered the greatest in the sport of free diving, swimming to the depths without breathing equipment, disappeared Sunday during a relatively unambitious dive in the Balearic Sea near the Spanish Island of Ibiza. The Russian Molchanov, 53, holds dozens of world records. In May she set the record of 233 feet without using fins. It’s a dangerous sport, in which swimmers sometimes do not return to the surface alive. After two days of searching, Molchanova has not been found.
The Deal: Campaigning for congressional approval of the Iran nuclear deal, President Obama is depicting it as the country’s most important foreign policy decision since deciding to invade Iraq. Obama is expected to deliver a speech tonight at American University in which he will say that many of the same politicians who supported the now much-debated Iraq war are opposed to the deal designed to stop Iran from making nuclear weapons.
Subject: The FBI is investigating the security of Hillary Clinton’s private email system she used while the was secretary of state, according to a report in the Washington Post. The agency wants to know whether any possibly classified information in the email traffic was properly protected. The controversy continues to drag on Clinton’s presidential campaign, giving Republicans a character issue and also raising doubts among democratic voters.
Nation: The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has reached a $21 million settlement with victims of sexual abuse by priests. Some of the victims already say the deal isn’t good enough. Of 575 people who filed claims against the archdiocese in bankruptcy court, only 330 will receive varying amounts of money.
>An uncontained wildfire named the “Rocky” fire in northern California has grown to 67,000 acres, touching three counties and defying efforts to bring it under control. Firefighters have seen rare and strange behavior in which the column of smoke occasionally crashes to the ground, blowing out heat and fire in an explosive effect that makes the fire grow even larger.
World: Two trains were derailed by a flash flood in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, killing 24 people. The trains were passing each other on a bridge when the flood hit.
The Nanny State: Responding to citizen outrage, the Indian government has restored public access to 857 pornography websites. The government had blocked the sites saying it was trying to shield children from access to porn, but free speech advocates spoke up and said the government was acting as the morals police. In a country of 1.25 billion people, it’s evident they already know about sex.
