Vol. 4, No. 190
Nation: After emotional debate, the South Carolina House voted last night to remove the Confederate flag from the State Capitol grounds. Gov. Nikki Haley said “It is a new day in South Carolina.”
The flag must be removed within 24 hours after Gov. Haley signs the bill. It will be moved to the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, near the Capitol.
Drachma Drama: Today is the deadline for Greece to submit a full bailout proposal for European leaders to accept or reject on Sunday.
Greece yesterday proposed a three-year loan from the euro zone bailout fund to keep its government afloat, but was immediately criticized for being short of details about what the country would do to get its finances in order. Neither did the request give a number for how much money the Greeks think they need.
Meanwhile Greece has extended its bank closures and ATM withdrawal limits until Monday.
Cyber Wednesday: Major computer glitches yesterday halted the NY Stock Exchange, United Airlines, and The Wall Street Journal website.
The stock exchange closed at 11:30 am and stayed down for 3 ½ hours for what the exchange said was a “connection” issue. Shortly afterwards, the Wall Street Journal website failed, but FBI director James Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee it may have been because investors flooded the site with inquiries about the market. “In my business we don’t love coincidences, but it does appear that there is not a cyber-intrusion involved,” Comey said.
Also reporting a “network connectivity issue,” United Airlines grounded 4,900 flights worldwide for about an hour. Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson said the Stock Exchange and United problems were not related.
The Wire: Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake fired her police commissioner 2 ½ months after protest riots and a spike in violent crime that followed. Commissioner Anthony Batts has been criticized for not controlling violent protests following the death of 26-year-old Freddie Gray in police custody. After the riots the police appeared to back off. Arrests dropped and murders increased.
The Sports Page: The New York Giants’ star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated after a 4th of July fireworks accident, ESPN reports. Pierre-Paul, 26, had been sitting on a nearly $15 million contract offer, hoping to get more. He’s not the only player to lose a digit and possibly his career. Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back CJ Wilson also lost two fingers in a fireworks accident last weekend.
>The world soccer body FIFA has banned the American former official Chuck Blazer for life because he was corrupt. Blazer pleaded guilty to tax evasion and racketeering and has been a witness whose testimony has led to the indictment of other FIFA officials.
Small Screen: Temperamental television anchorman Keith Olbermann is leaving ESPN less than two years after launching his show “Olbermann.” A statement from the Walt Disney Company, which owns ESPN, said “While the show’s content was distinctive and extremely high quality, we ultimately made a business decision to move in another direction.” It sounds like he was fired. Talented but troublesome, Olbermann has a long history of ruptures with television executives, which is not to say that he’s always wrong.
Trump This: Presidential candidate Donald Trump:
– June 16: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best … They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
– July 8: “I’ll tell you something, if I get the nomination, I’ll win the Latino vote.”
