Greece Votes “No”, US Wins Cup

Atlas Shrugged: Greeks celebrated in the streets last night after a reported 61 percent of voters said “no” to a European economic bailout that would have imposed more taxes, spending cuts, and pension reductions. Many said that it was a matter of national dignity after years of living under austerity imposed by European financiers.

Greece now faces the possibility of financial collapse, exit from the euro zone, and even expulsion from the European Union.

But the NY Times’ Paul Krugman says the Greeks did the right thing telling European creditors to stuff it, comparing them to “medieval doctors who insisted on bleeding their patients — and when their treatment made the patients sicker, demanded even more bleeding.”

The European Central Bank, which has an emergency meeting today, may determine what happens next. In a conciliatory move, Greece’s militant finance minister Yanis Varoufakis resigned, suggesting that the prime minister might install a more reasonable negotiating team.

With Greek banks closed by government decree, the ECB has injected enough cash to keep a minimal amount of money flowing through the Greek economy. If the ECB stops, a Greek collapse would be imminent.

The Japanese recovered to score twice, but the game was determined in the opening minutes.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
