So Goes Idaho, Ebola Screening, and Pink

Marriage: The Supreme Court yesterday lifted Justice Anthony Kennedy’s stay and allowed same-sex marriage to proceed in Idaho. The court was unconvinced by the state’s argument to delay for further court action. In its brief order the court said, “The application for stay presented to Justice Kennedy and by him referred to the Court is denied.” Six states have been added to the list of states allowing gay marriage just since Oct. 6. Gay marriage is now legal in 29 states and the District of Columbia.
Permawar: The Islamic State has renewed its attacks on the Syrian border town of Kobane in an effort to take the city. But ISIS has yet to capture the border crossing into Turkey, a vital pipeline for weapons and supplies. US led airstrikes are pounding ISIS, but that may not be enough to stop them from taking Kobane. Most of the civilian population has fled and only a few hundred are left in the city.
In Iraq, CNN reports that local officials in Anbar province are asking for help from US ground troops to fight ISIS. The extremist Muslim army is now in control of 80 percent of the province and a local official tells CNN the situation is “very bad.”
Ebola: New York’s JFK is the first airport to start screening arriving passengers for the Ebola virus. Passengers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will have to answer questions about their travel history and have their temperature taken. Four other US international airports will soon follow. The official death toll in West Africa is now up to 4,034 as countries struggle with the epidemic.
Even the US has blundered with the disease. Reports now say that Thomas Duncan, the Liberian man who died of Ebola in Dallas, was initially sent home after appearing at the emergency room with a 103-degree temperature.
World: More graves have been found near the southern Mexican town of Iguala where 43 students went missing last month. Authorities have already found 28 unidentified burned bodies in six shallow graves. Thirty-four people have been arrested in the case. One of the suspects led searchers to four new graves.
Money: After an up and down week, but mostly down, stocks fell into the red for the year. The Dow was down 465.59 points for the week. Investors are nervous, to say the least.
F: The Army War College has found that Montana Sen. John Walsh committed plagiarism writing his master’s thesis and has rescinded his degree. Walsh wrote the paper while he was a colonel in the National Guard. When news broke in July that his paper was under question, Walsh quit his campaign for re-election. He was appointed to the senate last February to replace Max Baucus, who became ambassador to China.
Put a Ring On It: Some people like their ice pink. But pink diamonds are not all that common and high quality pink is even harder to find. In Hong Kong this week a rare “fancy” 8.41-carat pink diamond sold at auction for $17.7 million. It’s already on a ring, but we don’t know who will be wearing it.
