Intel: The US yesterday released satellite images that it says are proof Russia has fired rockets from its own territory into eastern Ukraine. The images show Russian self-propelled artillery on their side of the border and the position of a Ukrainian military unit pockmarked with craters. It looks like most of the rockets missed their target.

Referring to one of the images the four page document says, “This slide shows self-propelled artillery only found in Russian military units, on the Russian side of the border, oriented in the direction of a Ukrainian military unit within Ukraine.” The analysis says the picture shows ground scorching indicating that the rockets had been fired.

Russia has denied any direct involvement in Ukraine and its foreign minister accused the US of “an unrelenting campaign of slander against Russia, ever more relying on open lies.”

Gaza: Fighting has resumed in Gaza and The United Nations called for an immediate ceasefire. UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon said the violence must stop “in the name of humanity.” Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal told CBS News’s Charlie Rose that Hamas was not going to stop fighting. He said, “People have the upper hand over occupation.” And he said, “Every Palestinian can die for the next generation to live in peace and freedom.”

Quiet Epidemic: The outbreak of Ebola virus that started last winter in Africa continues to grow and is beginning to kill even the doctors who treat the sick. One of Liberia’s most respected doctors died of the disease and Nigeria lost a doctor as well. An American doctor from Texas is bedridden with the infection.

Nearly 700 people have died of the disease. Hardest hit are Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

Ebola is a virus that causes a high fever that progresses to vomiting, diarrhea and both internal and external bleeding. It is 90 percent fatal. An outbreak starts with human contact with an infected animal and spreads among people by contact with infected blood, body fluids or organs, or exposure to a contaminated area.

Nasty Weather: Violent storms ripped through central New York yesterday, leveling homes and killing four people in rural Smithfield between Utica and Syracuse. Tornadoes also touched down in Ohio and Pennsylvania. One camper was killed when a tree fell on a group of children in Manchester, Maryland.

In Venice Beach, Ca., one man was killed and 11 injured when a freak lightning storm struck. One injured swimmer had to be pulled from the water.

Wheels: Vincenzo Nibali became Italy’s first winner of the Tour de France in 16 years after a couple of favorites crashed out of the race. Chris Froome of Great Britain crashed three times and dropped out. Alberto Contador of Spain fell and broke a shinbone. But Nibali raced well, leading in 19 of the Tour’s 21 legs.

That Was the News That Was: A CNN poll says that if the 2012 election were held today Mitt Romney would beat Barack Obama 53 percent to 44 percent. But the network says in an election today Hillary Clinton would beat Romney 55-42.

In a related development, CNN says it is going to stay on the air with the story of the disastrous Romney campaign until investigators find the wreckage.
