National: A Hofstra University student who died during a home invasion on Long Island was actually killed by a police officer responding to her 911 call. Investigators say Andrea Rebello, 21, her twin sister Jessica, and two others were in the house about 2 am when the intruder came in an open door. He let one woman go to an ATM to get him money. Andrea managed to dial 911 but when a police officer arrived the intruder grabbed her and threatened to kill her. The officer fire eight shots, killing the intruder and fatally hitting Andrea in the head.

• Between 50 and 60 people were injured Saturday in a small Virginia mountain town when an elderly driver plowed into a parade. It happened during the annual Hiker’s Parade celebrating the Appalachian Trail.

World: North Korea has fired four short-range missiles into the ocean in the past two days, despite diplomatic tensions with the US. It’s not uncommon for North Korea to test short-range missiles. The greater concern is that they would test a long-range missile as a provocation to Japan and the US.

• A nearly two-mile asteroid will pass relatively close to earth on May 31, a distance of about 3.6 million miles. It will be close enough for astronomers to get a detailed look at its surface and learn more about its history. If it were to hit the earth, it could end life on the planet.

Financial Pages: The Powerball Lottery paid a record $590 million for a single winning ticket yesterday. The ticket was sold in Florida to an as yet unknown buyer, who is about to have a lot of new friends.

Splitsville: The NY Daily News reports that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have broken up again after she threw him a birthday party and he didn’t show.

My Guitar, Gently: A 1966 VOX guitar played by George Harrison and John Lennon during their Beatle days sold at auction for $408,000. Harrison played I Am the Walrus on the guitar and Lennon later used it for Hello, Goodbye.

The Ponies: Kentucky Derby winner Orb failed in his bid for the Triple Crown, finishing fourth behind Oxbow in the Preakness.

The Obit Page: Former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla, who led the 1970s “dirty war” to eliminate subversives and political opponents, died at age 87 while serving a life sentence. At least 9,000 Argentines were killed, and by some estimates as many as 30,000. Many were tortured or just “disappeared”. Videla’s regime was famous for “death flights” in which live prisoners were thrown out of an airplane over the ocean.
