Nation: The shooter Friday night at UC Santa Barbara was a 22-year-old city college student who had vowed revenge on girls who wouldn’t go out with him. Elliot Rodger had Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism, and some other undisclosed psychological problems. He promised “a day of retribution.” In a chilling YouTube video he said he was going to kill all the girls in a sorority house. “I will annihilate every girl in the sorority house. I will take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every person I see there,” he said.
Investigators say he started his spree by stabbing to death three young men in his apartment house. He went on to shoot and kill three other people and wound 13.
Despite his emotional troubles, Rodger was found in possession of three legally purchased semi-automatic pistols and 400 rounds of ammunition.
The father of one of the dead, Christopher Ramirez, who was a sophomore English student, made a surprise appearance before reporters waiting for a Sheriff’s press conference.
Trying to keep his emotions in control, Richard Ramirez said, “You don’t think it will happen to your child, until it does.Chris was a really great kid, ask anyone who knew him.His death has left our family lost and broken.”
He went on to say, “Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights, what about Chris’s right to live? When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say stop this madness, we don’t have to live like this!”
Ukraine: Voters went to the polls today to replace former President Viktor F. Yanukovych, the corrupt leader who was toppled in a bloody uprising four months ago. Voting appeared to go smoothly except in restive eastern Ukraine, where as many as 80 percent of polling stations were no functioning. Polling in recent days show pro-Western billionaire Petro Poroshenko is the favorite to win, but he will need 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.
World: Belgian authorities are searching for a gunman who killed three people yesterday at the Jewish Museum in Brussels. An Israeli couple in their 50s and a French woman who was an employee of the museum were killed. No motive was immediately apparent, but authorities said it appeared to be an anti-Semitic attack.
Nation: An uncontrolled wildfire near Sedona, AZ has burned more than 7,500 acres, threatening homes and causing evacuations. So far it has burned only trees.
PS: Kim and Kanye got married yesterday in Italy.
