Vol. 3, No. 143
Nation: Seven people are dead and seven injured in the Isla Vista neighborhood near UC Santa Barbara after a drive-by shooting spree and two gun battles with police. The gunman is among the dead, an apparent suicide. One of the injured is a bicyclist hit by a car. Isla Vista is a student residential paradise with shops and restaurants and students walking the balmy Southern California streets.
The incident started at about 9:30 last night when the driver of a black BMW opened fire on a group of people. Several police officers were nearby. The driver moved and there were several shooting scenes.
Police say they have made a preliminary identification of the shooter but have not released his name. They said they have found evidence that the shooting spree was a premeditated mass murder.
World: The overturned hull of a missing British yacht was found in the North Atlantic by a US Navy warship and a rescue swimmer found no sign of the four crew ages 22 to 56. The boat’s life raft was still attached. The yacht Cheeki Rafiki was 1,000 miles east of Massachusetts last Thursday when it reported it was taking on water. The search had almost been abandoned but the families of the missing sailors had asked for it to be continued. The US Coast Guard says if it finds no survivors by midnight, the search will be suspended.
Nigeria: The NY Times reports that the Nigerian army is so incompetent and riddled with corruption that it’s not only failing to help with the search for nearly 300 abducted school girls, but it is hindering the effort. Boko Haram militants have chewed up patrols looking for the girls and the Islamic fighters have been hitting villages and towns with near impunity. The paper says Nigeria’s capital Abuja is crawling with foreign agents who have arrived to help, but they are appalled by the Nigerian military and officialdom.
4 Sale: Representatives for Shelly Sterling say her estranged husband Donald has authorized her to sell the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team. The team is owned by a trust controlled by the Sterlings. A sale might come as a big relief to other NBA owners who wouldn’t have to force a sale. And it would avoid a potentially huge legal fight over the league ordering the sale because Sterling was recorded making racist comments. Some reports say Mrs. Sterling wants to retain partial control, but it’s unclear whether the NBA would allow that.
Polticks: Michigan Rep. John Conyers dodged a political bullet yesterday when a federal judge allowed him on the August primary ballot despite his failure to collect 1,000 valid voter signatures. It could have been curtains for his career. The Michigan secretary of state had rejected an appeal. Conyers was first elected in 1964 and is a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus.
iShocked: Apple’s app store has removed a marijuana game called Weed Firm after it hit #1 on the charts. Players assume the persona of weed dealer Ted Growing in his lucrative but illegal and dangerous enterprise. While the game might be unsavory, it is called virtual reality. Has anyone at the app store seen what’s on HBO?
Nuptials: Kim Kardashian, who is famous for being famous, is supposed to marry rapper Kanye West in Italy today. They have been followed across Europe by an army of paparazzi and reporters. Expected to be present at the sacred vows for the twice previously married reality star are her mother Kris Jenner (2), stepfather Bruce Jenner (3), sister Kloe (1), and baby North (0). It is hard to keep up with the Kardashians.
