Vol. 3, No. 48
Hijacked: The co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines plane locked his colleague out of the cockpit and hijacked the jet to Geneva seeking asylum in Switzerland. The plane with 202 passengers was originally bound from Addis Ababa to Rome, but the hijacker took over when his co-pilot went to the bathroom. The hijacker was taken into custody after landing.
Nation: Snake-handling minister Jamie Coots died Saturday night after being bitten on the hand by a viper. He was the pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name in Middlesboro, Ky. and had been featured on the reality series “Snake Salvation.” Coots had said he was previously bitten nine times and was saved by his faith. Coots based his ministry on the often-misunderstood Biblical passage that says, “They shall take up serpents.” A parishioner died of snakebite in 1995. But Coots said, “I feel in my heart, because God opened it up to me, if I stopped taking up serpents I would die and go to hell.” Coots refused treatment and died at home.
World: Miners who had been trapped while illegally digging in an abandoned South African gold mine refused to come out after the shaft opening was cleared. Eleven miners came out, but roughly 200 might have stayed underground fearing arrest.
Old Man: Yet another winter storm is dropping snow in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It’s expected to reach the East Coast by tomorrow night. It’s 23 in Chicago, 16 in Pilot Knob, NY, and 23 in Boston.
The Tube: Jimmy Fallon makes his debut on “The Tonight Show” tonight. The Saturday Night live alum takes over from Jay Leno as NBC tries to hold the eyeballs of a younger generation. Seth Meyers, late of SNL, takes Fallon’s chair at “Late Night”.
Sochi: All the following results have already appeared on television.
-The old man of the mountains Bode Miller, 36, won bronze in the men’s Super-G, his sixth Olympic medal and a record for American skiers. He’s also the oldest American skier to win a medal. Miller tied with Canada’s Jan Hudec, who also won bronze. Miller skied just barely in control, risking a crash all the way down to make it to the podium. US teammate Andrew Weibrecht was the surprise winner of silver.
-US Hockey beat Slovenia 5-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
-The American speed skaters shed their techy skating suits for the old model, but have still failed to win a medal. The Dutch have won 16 speed skating medals. The closest competitors are the Canadians with one silver and one bronze.
-Sportscaster Bob “Pinkeye” Costas is scheduled to return to Olympic coverage tonight. An eye infection that made it hard for him to see, and made him hard to look at, sidelined him since last week.
The Gavel: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, a constitutional originalist, has ruled that Chicago deep-dish pizza is not real pizza. Chicago pizza is layered with fillings rather than just topped. Just as he believes the law should adhere to the original intent of the framers of the Constitution, he said pizza should stick to the original intent of pizza. The native of Queens, NY said of the Chicago variety, “It’s very tasty, but it’s not pizza.”
