Winter Down South, Summer in Sochi

Winter, Y’all: A new winter storm is beginning to dump snow and ice on the south and southeast before it heads up the East Coast. Atlanta, which got socked with major traffic jams only two weeks ago, is preparing to get it right this time.

Nation: The US is considering a drone strike to take out an American citizen believed to be helping to plot terror attacks. The NY Times says the unnamed target is in Pakistan. The most prominent American working with al Qaeda is Adam Gadahn, a native of Southern California. Under a new policy ordered by the President the strike should be carried out by the Pentagon rather than the secretive CIA, although the Pentagon does not control drones.

>The Obama administration has once again delayed the healthcare “employee mandate” for businesses with 50 to 99 employees. Originally delayed to Jan. 1, 2015, the administration is sliding the requirement to 2016. The delay puts the requirement beyond the politics of midterm elections, although Republicans say it’s another failure of Obamacare.

Diplomacy: French President Francois Hollande is in Washington for a state visit, including a formal dinner at The White House. His recent breakup with his companion Valerie Trierweiler sent the White House social and protocol offices scurrying to reprint the dinner invitations and re-arrange the seating. The big question: Will there be dancing and who would the rogue French president dance with?

World: A Sunni suicide-bomb instructor using a live bomb belt for a demonstration blew up his own class, Iraqi authorities said. Twenty-two people were killed and 15 injured in the blast at a training camp north of Baghdad. They were all members of the Islamic State for Iraq and Syria (ISIS) that has been fighting the Shiite government. The NY Times quotes an Iraqi army officer saying the instructor was a prolific recruiter who was “able to kill the bad guys for once.”

An Algerian military transport carrying 99 people, including soldiers and their families, crashed yesterday in a remote area of the country. Everyone on board was killed.

The Obit Page: Shirley Temple Black, who as a child tap-danced and sang her way to Hollywood stardom, has died at home in California at age 85. The little girl with curls was the darling of The Depression. She retired from the movies at 22, but later became involved in Republican politics. She served as ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.

Sochi: All the following results have already appeared on television.

Julia Mancuso won the first American women’s alpine medal with a bronze in the super combined, which includes downhill and slalom. Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany won gold.

The American women’s hockey team advanced to a 2-0 record with a 9-0 clubbing of Switzerland. They scored three times in 55 seconds. In the history of women’s Olympic hockey since 2002, Canada has won three golds, the US one.

It was 52 degrees tonight (Tuesday) at 7 pm in Sochi. Snowboarders in the men’s halfpipe say conditions are not ideal. The temperature at the winter games hit 60 Monday, and could be headed to 63 by Thursday. In the mountains daytime temperatures are above freezing, melting the snow and giving skiers and snowboarders fits. Training was cancelled for ski jumpers who were landing on mushy snow and finishing in a puddle.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
