Nasty Travel Weather, Pope Hits Money Worship

Travel: It’s snowing in western New York and Pennsylvania as holiday travelers hit the road. Snow fell in Atlanta, but mostly it’s raining along the Atlantic coast and the I-95 corridor, the east coast artery from Florida to Maine that will be clogged with cars today.

Time Out: “60 Minutes” Correspondent Lara Logan and her producer Max  McClellan were ordered to take a leave of absence after an internal investigation said they did a poor job vetting Logan’s story about the attack on the Benghazi consulate. Logan’s now-retracted report relied heavily on a security contractor named Dylan Davies who said he was in the thick of events, but turned out to be lying. The CBS internal report says, “The fact that the FBI and the State Department had information that differed from the account Davies gave to “60 Minutes” was knowable before the piece aired. But the wider reporting resources of CBS News were not employed in an effort to confirm his account.” The internal report also stung “60 Minutes” for not revealing that Davies’ book was printed by a division of CBS.

The Supremes: The Supreme Court agreed to hear two cases challenging the provision in Obamacare that requires company health plans to offer birth control regardless of the religious objections of the employers. The Obama administration exempted religiously affiliated nonprofit organizations from the requirement, but says for-profit companies cannot impose their religious beliefs on the healthcare plans of their employees.

World: In the East China Sea, two American B-52 bombers flew through China’s newly claimed airspace over unoccupied islands that are in dispute with Japan. It was a direct challenge to China, which countered that they allowed it to happen. A US military spokesman said the two unarmed bombers followed normal procedures, meaning they didn’t phone ahead and tell the Chinese they were coming.

  • In his first major papal declaration Pope Francis said capitalism is “a new tyranny” and denounced the “idolatry of money.” The pope wrote, “Just as the commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say ‘thou shalt not’ to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills,” Francis wrote in the document issued on Tuesday.

  • A 40-foot sailboat overloaded with 100 Haitian migrants capsized late Monday off the Bahamas, drowning 30 people.

National: A judge ordered the release of 911 tapes from the Sandy Hook school massacre a year ago. They will be made public Dec. 4.

Out There: A 4.5 billion year old comet is about to pass close to the sun and possibly be obliterated in the process. Comet ISON is expected to give scientists a look at how the planets were formed, although it may be brief. ISON’s lights are already flickering, suggesting it might already be breaking up.

Smart Alec: MSNBC has dumped Alec Baldwin’s late night talk show only two weeks after he was suspended for blurting a gay slur at a paparazzo. The show was on air only a month. The network and the actor were said to be having “creative differences” from the start, meaning Baldwin was a nightmare.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
