Vol.2, No. 331
Breakthrough: The US and a coalition of five countries reached a groundbreaking agreement that stops Iran from making bomb-grade uranium. The deal lasts just 6 months, but it signals a different relationship between Iran and the West. This provides time to reach a more detailed and secure agreement. The US is easing economic sanctions to encourage Iran. President Obama said the pact creates “a future in which we can verify that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and that it cannot build a nuclear weapon.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has repeatedly said you can’t trust Iran, denounced the agreement as an “historic mistake”.
Healthcare: The State of Kentucky, home to Obamacare–hating Sen. Mitch McConnell, has become one of the showcase states of the healthcare markets. So far 56,422 Kentuckians have bought insurance plans and 45,622 of them have qualified and enrolled in Medicaid. Kentucky has a Democratic governor who not only set up his own healthcare exchange, but agreed to expand Medicare to insure more of his citizens.
World: A new report says 11,420 children under age 17 have been killed in the Syrian civil war. A stunning 764 were executed, and more than 100, including infants, were tortured, according to the Oxford Research Group. The report also says 389 were children were intentionally killed by sniper fire.
- ØThousands of Pakistanis gathered in Peshawr yesterday to protest US drone strikes. Pakistani anger appears to have reached a new high on Nov. 1, when a drone killed Hakimullah Mehsud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban. Opposition leader Imran Khan accused the US of sabotaging talks with the Taliban and said, “There can be no peace unless drones are stopped.”
Stormy Weather: An early winter storm moved across the West, causing 8 deaths as it dumped rain and snow. Heavy weather is expected again today, but the leading edges have already moved east. Snow swirled in the football stadiums as Notre Dame lost to Brigham Young in South Bend and Ohio State beat Indiana in Columbus. Chicago is headed for a high of 25 degrees today.
Sport: Philippine boxer Manny Pacqiao beat the crap out of Brandon Rios last night in Macau in a comeback for the international welterweight title. In the perverse logic of punching people for a living, Pacqiao said, “My victory is a symbol of my people’s comeback from a natural disaster and a natural tragedy.”
Out of Style: Abercrombie and Fitch, the company that once outfitted Ernest Hemingway for African safaris, appears to be losing its market again. They are closing some stores. A business analyst said Abercrombie’s aesthetic of an “aspirational, New England prep-inspired teenager” is no longer relevant. Of course it didn’t help that the CEO said he wanted only thin people to buy Abercrombie’s clothes.
Small Screen: The British television series Dr. Who, about a character who travels through time and space, has done it for real by turning 50 years old last night. Ten million people watched. Actually, the Doctor cheated because he was cancelled for 15 years before coming back, but who can say whether he was actually off the air or just disappearing in time.
