National: A 61-year-old woman was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed Philadelphia building late yesterday, making her the 14^th survivor. Six people died when a building under demolition collapsed on a thrift store next door. The survivors had surprisingly minor injuries.

Military Docket: The Army psychiatrist accused of massacring 13 people at Ft. Hood, Tex. in 2009 said in court this week that he “acted in defense of others”. Maj. Nidal Hasan said so a day after he was given permission to act as his own lawyer. Hasan said that back in 2009 he was defending Taliban leaders in Afghanistan, including the one-eyed Mullah Omar, from soldiers who would be deployed from his base.

• Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty to randomly murdering 16 Afghan civilians. He gets life in prison, a sentence likely to be protested in Afghanistan. Asked by a military judge why he went on a shooting rampage Bales said, “Sir, as far as why — I’ve ask that question a million times since then. There’s not a good reason in this world for why I did the horrible things I did.”

Attempt: Paris Jackson, the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, was taken to the hospital yesterday after attempting suicide with a knife. The 15-year-old was reported to be OK. She is one of the family plaintiffs in the current trial of a $1.5 billion lawsuit claiming the concert promoter AEG Live was responsible for her father’s death by accidental drug overdose.

No Help: The two hosts of a New York self-help radio show committed suicide in their Brooklyn apartment. John Littig, 48, and Lynne Rosen, 46, would say such things as “Do one thing that scares you every day.” Their show on WBAI was called The Pursuit of Happiness.

Jack: An 84-year-old Florida woman has claimed the record $590 Powerball jackpot. She chose the lump sum of $370 million before taxes. If she’d taken the 30-year plan she could have had the full $590 million.

Stop Making Sense: The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is backing off its decision to once again allow passengers to carry small knives on airplanes. The TSA received a lot of pushback from flight crews and the public saying any kind of knives are a danger.

Cable World: The Showtime series The Borgias comes to a sudden end June 16 with the close of season three. The producers say it seemed like the right time to end it. Sex, treachery, men in leather, and death at swordpoint will still be available on HBO’s Game of Thrones.
