DHS Raids Minnesota Rep. Omar

Vol. 15, No. 2398
ENEMY OF THE STATE: Agents from the Department of Homeland Security yesterday raided and searched the Washington home of Minnesota’s progressive Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar in an investigation of her family’s immigration paperwork.
The raid took place well within the customary 60-day window in which the Justice Department has traditionally avoided dramatic actions against candidates for office. The investigators took away boxes marked as DHS evidence.
Omar is an immigrant from Somalia who has been a frequent and bitter target of President Trump, who has said he wants her … and all Somali immigrants … to leave the country. He has said, “Ilhan Omar is garbage.”
Just on Saturday in Tennessee Trump told a crowd. “She comes from Somalia, they don’t have a government, they don’t have police. All they have is crime and squalor.” And he said, “These people from Somalia, what they’ve done to Minnesota, should never be allowed and let’s see what happens.”
The 44-year-old congresswoman secured asylum status in the US with her family in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. She has been the subject of debunked conspiracy theories that the second of her three husbands was her brother whom she married to help him become a citizen.
She said in a statement on Twitter/X, “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.”
TEED OFF: A federal judge in Washington is outraged that the Trump administration went ahead without notice and cut down 430 trees at the District of Columbia public golf course that President Trump wants to re-make into a competition-level course. Another 299 trees are marked for removal.
“I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done,” Judge Ana Reyes said to administration lawyers. “On what universe did anyone in your offices think that that was acceptable?”
Like he did with tearing down the East Wing of the White House and other projects in Washington, Trump is moving ahead on the golf course without any kind of review or permission.
THAT’S RICH: There’s a certain irony that Trump’s announcement of suspending sanctions on Russian energy exports came while US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were meeting Ukrainian and European officials at Witkoff’s exclusive golf club outside Miami on Friday. The country club boys are on assignment solving the world’s problems.
The NY Times reports that when Kushner/Witkoff announced that the US would be buying Russian diesel, the Ukrainians asked what they would get in return. The Americans, the Times reports, responded that the US was doing plenty for Ukraine already.
Trump has been blaming Ukraine for higher energy prices because they’ve been attacking Russian energy production. Now the US is warning that it might withhold intelligence from Ukraine if they don’t stop attacking Russian the energy sites.
CRAZY POLITICS: While Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico was missing from the campaign for 10 days with what he said was a bad case of the flu, Republicans spread the online conspiracy theory that he was in Ohio getting mental health treatment.
The Ohio facility named in the rumor said Talarico had not been a patient and Talarico’s own home security cameras proved he had been there the whole time.
THE WAR ROOM: A super tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz suffered an explosion and caught fire. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said they believe the ship hit a naval mine … which would have been planted by them.
The IRGC seemed to claim that the tanker was passing through without their permission, saying in a statement, “A devastating fire is the fate of any tanker that violates the rules and disregards security in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Earlier in the week an American strike disabled a cargo ship the Pentagon said was attempting to run the US naval blockade against Iran.
INFINITE SCROLL:
— Despite having previously said he approved of live-streaming an execution at Fort Hood, Texas, President Trump dodged the backlash yesterday saying, “There are two thoughts, show it and don’t show it. I’ll make a decision ultimately.”
— A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to stop airing taxpayer-funded ads that were made to glorify and promote the President. Trump has said the ads were made to promote the country, but one of them is called “God Made Trump.”
— President Trump said he’s considering firing ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle after it was reported that she had asked a political donor to pay off her $100,000 credit card debt. “Well, we’re looking at it,” Trump said. “Yeah, we’re not happy.”
— New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia is set to deliver her first briefing today. She should probably expect a lot of questions about herself and her credentials to hold the job.
THE SPIN RACK: Pope Leo XIV is expected to have surgery this week to remove what has been described as a “localized nodule” in one of his lungs. — A man died yesterday when he fell from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia and landed on the roof of a haunted house attraction. They consequently closed roller coasters across the country. Six Flags last month closed its X2 ride in California after several people suffered serious brain injuries from the G forces. — A raging fire yesterday ripped through the historic Marché des Enfants Rouges in Paris, the city’s oldest covered open-air market that was established in the 1600s. It had been the place to buy cheese, breads, wines and vegetables … the stuff of being Parisian.
BELOW THE FOLD: After Texas Senate candidate James Talarico appeared with country singer Kacey Musgraves, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted that she would take Ella Langley over Musgraves “any day” and she would also take Ken Paxton over Talarico.
Musgraves responded, “I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.”
