THE GREENLAND GAMBIT: President Trump yesterday announced a security agreement with Greenland and its parent country Denmark that he claimed will address “ALL of our many U.S. concerns.” It seems to involve a big military buildup in Greenland.

  This appears to be a diplomatic solution to what for a while looked like an international crisis.

  After claiming the US needs to own Greenland and even threatening to take it by force, Trump said that, “The United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America.” He said this will involve  “developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many.”

   “Additionally,” Trump wrote, “from now no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval.”

  Denmark’s prime minister said there is an agreement to be signed soon, but was quick to point out that the deal “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the Kingdom of Denmark.

IT’S ARTIFICIAL: The internet ricocheted this week with an image of Donald Trump kissing his close aide Natalie Harp on a golf course that was created with artificial intelligence. Despite how obviously fake the photo was, it generated debate about the president who says artificial intelligence is not a problem.

  The Trump photo was triggered by a human, but artificial intelligence continues to go rogue. Google announced this week that its AI models in testing went out on the internet and hacked other companies, becoming the fourth major tech company to disclose such an incident in recent months.

  Google said that in all three incidents their AI models stopped once they realized what they had done, but such incidents are feeding the call for a slowdown in the race to develop artificial intelligence and keep it in check. California Gov. Gavin Newsome called for AI developers to introduce a “kill switch” for AI programs running out of bounds.

THE WAR ROOM: Russia is holding parliamentary elections, including in parts of Ukraine taken by invasion more than 4 1/2 years ago.  Ukraine calls this “illegal” but can’t do anything about it.

 Russian authorities say the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia territories they taken and refer to as the “new regions,” have over 3.5 million potential voters. Russian President Vladimir Putin said those people will be voting for the Duma “for the first time since their reunification with Russia.”

 INFINITE SCROLL:

— President Trump announced yesterday that he’s banning “Fake News” CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House “as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”

 He wrote, “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.”

  Being banned from reporting fiction and lies while covering Trump would be very difficult.

  “There’s something wrong with a country that can allow people to write purposely negative stories,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, but by the end of yesterday, no one from those outlets had been escorted from the building.

  MSNOW later said they had been denied access. 

  Asked if his ban could survive a court challenge, Trump replied, “I don’t think that a court should allow fake news to be written day after day after day.”

— The President said yesterday that his son Don Jr. has paid back the Russian oligarch who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars subsidizing junior’s extravagant wedding on a private island in the Bahamas. Trump said it is “common” for people to give a wedding party to a friend. Junior and his new wife Bettina described the rich Russian as a “dear friend.”

BET ON IT: The NY Times reports according to former employees that the gambling website DraftKings has used data science and artificial intelligence to identify gamblers more likely to lose and peppering them with promotions to keep them playing, losing, and making more money for the company.

  The Times reports that, “At the same time, four other former employees said, DraftKings has stalled or squashed efforts to use similar technology to predict who might develop a gambling problem based on their betting activity.”

  One former DraftKings analyst said, “It is as predatory as it sounds.” 

THE SPIN RACK: A large crowd gathered yesterday outside The Kennedy Center in Washington protesting the possibility that President Trump might demolish the cultural center established and built as a memorial to assassinated President John F. Kennedy. The group included many artists who had performed at the center. — In another blow to Hollywood, ABC after 25 years is moving production of “American Idol” to Atlanta. California has been struggling to compete for entertainment production against other states that offer more lucrative tax credits.

BELOW THE FOLD: Alumnae of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority are pursuing their lawsuit against the organization claiming that the national leadership improperly allowed a chapter to admit a transgender woman.

  Plaintiff Allie Coghan said, “We were promised a sisterhood, and we were given a brother.”
