ARTIFICIAL TEARS: Former President Brack Obama at a recent fundraising event warned that artificial intelligence technology could be “dangerous” and urged Democrats to develop political and governing plans to contain the downside of AI in the immediate future.

  Obama said that candidates running for president in 2028 ought to make AI one of their “central agendas” and “have a very clear plan” for responding to safety and economic concerns spun off by the technology.

  This comes as major executives at big technology companies say the industry needs to slow down its development of AI and keep it from running out of control.  Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI; Elon Musk, SpaceX’s chief executive; and Demis Hassabis, the chair of Google DeepMind, have all spoken in agreement cautioning about the development of AI.

  Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, wrote in an essay that; “AI has been advancing drastically faster, driven primarily by AI’s growing ability to build the next generation of AI. This dynamic is called recursive self-improvement, and it is starting to happen across the industry, including at Anthropic, as we and others have described.”

  In other words, it’s running out of control. President Trump said, “Whoever wins AI wins. It’s an expression I came up with.”

THE WAR ROOM: President Trump on Sunday said he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to ask him to “stop knocking out diesel fuel” targets in Russia, saying the attacks were contributing to a global shortage of the fuel.

  “Mr. Zelensky has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia, let them go after targets but not diesel fuel, because he’s causing a shortage of diesel,” Trump said, adding that there were “plenty other targets.”

  “This isn’t done by the Middle East, this is done by what’s happening in Russia and Ukraine,” he told reporters while traveling in Ireland.

  Note that he’s blaming someone else for rising fuel prices.

  AAA says the price of diesel in the  US has reached an all-time high average of $6.23.

INFINITE SCROLL:

— Trump stepped in political doo-doo Saturday in Ireland saying that a unified Ireland would be “fantastic.” 

 At a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump said he would love to see the reunification of the Republic of Ireland with the United Kingdom’s Northern Ireland.

  The matter of Irish independence and unification was the cause of decades of guerilla warfare in which as many as 3,600 people were killed. Trump seems unaware of this.

  “I don’t want to cause any problems but I’d love to see it unified,” Trump told a reporter. “It’s going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now.”

— Trump was busy over his weekend of travel to Ireland posting pictures  of his White House repairs and AI mockups of his gilded ballroom under construction.

— The President is not too busy with his construction projects, war, and the cost of living to attempt directing the affairs of the Smithsonian. He posted on his social media a call for the Smithsonian to put on a five-year exhibit honoring George Washington.

  Trump wrote, “And yet, during our Nation’s 250th Anniversary Year, the Museum has failed to give George Washington and our other Founding Fathers the celebration they deserve.”

  The President is fascinated with “greatness.” He wrote,” Tell the stories of Americans who faced great challenges, overcame them, built great things, defended our Country, made America better, and helped our Nation more fully live up to our Founding Ideals.”

CENTER COURT: No. 1 ranked Alexander Zverev of Germany and No. 2 Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina won the singles titles at the US Open in New York. They each won  $5.5 million. 

ROAD RALLY: Los Angeles police yesterday choked off an organized rally of mini-bikes on a downtown bridge and detained more than 70 people, many of them juveniles. They had been performing doughnuts and wheelies, and riding on the wrong side of the roadway. The police confiscated 78 mini-bikes.

  The cops had heard advance word of the rally and waited until they could block it off and stop it. 

  The LAPD has been busy with such events in recent days. Last week they busted two events, impounding 200 cars in one and 100 cars in another. The cars had been performing “burnouts” and doughnuts.

THE SPIN RACK: Video yesterday captured a young man and woman evidently in their 20s sitting and holding hands just after 3 am on New York City subway tracks until they here hit and killed by a train at Manhattan’s Spring Street station. — Rep Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for governor, of Wisconsin had to swim to safety along with his pilot after an emergency landing on Lake Wausau. The plane had lost power on approach to Wausau Downtown Airport and the pilot put it down in the lake. — As many as 129 people are missing and six confirmed dead after an Indonesian ferry capsized in heavy weather. About 100 people were rescued.
