US and Denmark “Agree to Disagree”

THE GREENLAND GAMBIT: Denmark, Greenland, and the United States have a “fundamental disagreement” over the future of the island territory of Denmark, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the Danish foreign minister, said after a meeting with top Trump administration officials.

President Trump has repeatedly said the US needs to own Greenland and that he would even take it by force if Denmark does not agree to give it up or sell it. By “fundamental differences,” the Danish representatives are saying, “you can’t have it.” Rasmussen called the discussion “frank” and “constructive,” which in the subtlety of diplomatic language sometimes means there was shouting across the table.

In non-diplomatic language Trump posted on his Truth Social; “NATO: Tell Denmark to get them out of here, NOW! Two dogsleds won’t do it! Only the USA can!!!”

Representatives of both sides agreed to form a working group to find a way to accommodate both governments without violating the territorial integrity of Denmark or the Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

ICE, ICE BABY: A federal agent shot and wounded a man in Minneapolis last night a week after the fatal shooting of a woman, sparking hours of clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying a Venezuelan man ran off  from a “targeted traffic stop” and the officer used his gun in a tussle with the suspect and two other people, one of whom wielded a shovel.

ON DEADLINE: The FBI yesterday searched the Virginia home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson in an investigation into a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified government documents. Natanson was at home when federal agents searched her home seizing her phone, two laptops, and a Garmin watch. One of the laptops was office-issue and the other was personal.

It is rare under any circumstance or authority for a journalist’s work to be the target of a law enforcement search. “This past week, at the request of the Department of War, the Department of Justice and FBI executed a search warrant at the home of a Washington Post journalist who was obtaining and reporting classified and illegally leaked information from a Pentagon contractor,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in in a social media post.

Natanson covers the federal workforce and the upheaval under the Trump administration. She has said she’s developed about 1,000 sources in federal employment.

The reporter was told that she is not the target of the investigation. The search warrant said that law enforcement is investigating Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a system administrator with a top-secret security clearance who’s been accused of taking home classified intelligence reports, according to an FBI affidavit.

IRAN: President Trump told reporters yesterday that Iran has agreed to stop the mass killing of anti-government protesters and will not hang any of those arrested. Trump said  that “important sources” in Tehran told the US government that the regime has paused its brutal crackdown. They did not carry out the scheduled execution of a 26-year-old man.

With the Iranian internet shut down it’s difficult to get an account the dead, but the number is in the thousands.

Asked whether this means he will withhold his threatened military action against the Iranian regime, Trump said, “We’re going to watch and see.”

THE REGIME:

— In its latest move to reduce immigration, the Trump administration is ceasing immigrant visa processing for people from 75 countries, including Brazil, Iran, Russia and Somalia.

A State Department spokesman said the ban is targeted at countries whose citizens are likely to rely on government benefits.  Tommy Pigott said,

“The Trump administration is bringing an end to the abuse of America’s immigration system by those who would extract wealth from the American people.”

— Applicants for jobs with the traditionally independent military newspaper Stars & Stripes are being asked questions about their support for the Trump administration.

One question: “How would you advance the President’s Executive Orders and policy priorities in this role? Identify one or two relevant Executive Orders or policy initiatives that are significant to you, and explain how you would help implement them if hired.”

The question has been added to the Office of Personnel Management’s boilerplate application form and was not specifically designed for the Stars & Stripes.

THE OBIT PAGE: Claudette Colvin, who in 1955 became a civil rights icon refusing to give up her bus seat to a white woman on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, died on Tuesday in Texas at age 86.

Colvin was only 15 when she stood up … or rather sat down for herself. In those days if the white section of a bus filled up the driver could order the Black passengers to give up their seats. When Colvin refused the driver stopped and called the police. She was arrested, tried, and convicted of violating segregation laws.

“History had me glued to the seat,” she told The New York Times in 2021.

This happened before Rosa Parks refused to move on a bus. Civil right leaders chose Parks to be their standard bearer in court … because she had lighter skin.

THE SPIN RACK: The Supreme Court yesterday voted 7-2 to allow an Illinois congressman and others to pursue a lawsuit challenging the state’s practice of counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day. They said a candidate has legal standing to challenge election laws. — Astronauts from the US, Russia, and Japan splashed down in the Pacific after leaving the International Space Station early because one of them had an unexplained medical emergency. — Federal agents yesterday busted in and searched the upstate New York cabin of actor Timothy Busfield and wife, Melissa Gilbert, in connection with his Arizona arrest on charges of child sexual abuse.

BELOW THE FOLD: Actor Kiefer Sutherland, the star of the television series “24,” was arrested and charged with assaulting  a ride-share driver near the intersection of Sunset and Fairfax in Hollywood … Hey! Right in our old neighborhood!

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
