The Ghost of Jeffrey Epstein

SHE’S NOT HERE FOR YOU: The Jeffrey Epstein case, like one of those horror movie monsters, just won’t die. Members of both political parties yesterday pushed for more information from the Justice Department about the investigation that brought Epstein’s indictment in 2019.

“I think it’s a good start,” Republican Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee said of President Trump’s call for opening the federal grand jury testimony that led to Epstein’s indictment on charges of sex trafficking. But Burchett said he still wants to see as many files as possible released. It could be a year or more before the grand jury testimony is released, and possibly with many redactions.

Burchett is one of 10 Republicans moving to force a vote on whether the administration must release the files.

“People have a reason that they want to know what’s in there,” said Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar said. “They believe the president when he said there’s stuff in there that people should see.”

The NY Times did a couple of deep dives over the weekend into the Epstein case, which has always carried the odor of cronyism at the top. Trump has never been accused of have sex with underage girls, but  he was close to Epstein for years.

The Times mentions the case of Maria Farmer, who told the paper that she was alarmed by Epstein’s pattern of pursuing girls and young women while building friendships with prominent men, including Trump and President Bill Clinton.

Farmer described once being with Epstein and visiting Trump in his Trump Tower office. She recalled Trump looking at her legs and Epstein saying,  “No, no. She’s not here for you.”

ENEMIES LIST: President Trump over the weekend was busy posting memes about his perceived political enemies. He re-posted an artificial intelligence video showing former President Barack Obama being arrested and slammed behind bars. He posted a montage of eight enemies in prison orange including Obama, former FBI Director James Comey, and Former Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper.

Trump has also posted at least 17 times in support since Friday when Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said she is referring Obama administration officials to the Justice Department for prosecution over allegations that they “manufactured” intelligence to promote the idea that Russia interfered in the 2016 election on behalf of Trump.

THE WAR ROOM: Israeli forces killed and wounded dozens of Palestinians yesterday as crowds gathered near aid trucks in the northern Gaza Strip near a crossing from Israel into the territory.

Palestinian health officials say more than 60 people were killed.

The Israeli military said it had fired “warning shots” after thousands of Gazans had gathered and that their soldiers opened fire to “remove an immediate threat posed to them.” They also said that the number of reported casualties “does not align” with its own initial assessment.

The Palestinian health ministry also says that 76 children and 10 adults have died of malnutrition under Israeli food blockades since the conflict started in October 2023.

FATAL ATTRACTION: Police on Long Island are investigating the death of a man killed last week when he was sucked into a magnetic resonance imaging machine because he was wearing a 20-pound metal chain. Officials at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury said the man had walked into the room where he was not supposed to go. He was the husband of the woman inside the scanner at the time.

Deaths like this have happened before. In 2001, a 6-year-old boy was killed during an MRI at a hospital in Valhalla, New York, when a metal oxygen tank flew across the room after the machine’s electromagnet was turned on.

THE SPIN RACK:  The number of people missing in Kerr County Texas following the July 4th floods has dropped from 97 to three. This is not an uncommon occurrence after a disaster in which people are reported missing in the confusion and later located. The number of dead has grown by three to 135. — A man who had been kicked out of the Vermont Hollywood nightclub in Los Angeles Saturday night is accused of driving his car into the crowd outside, injuring 36 people and putting seven in critical condition. The driver, a 29 year old man, was dragged from his car, beaten, and shot. The shooter ran away. — Andy Byron, the CEO of the data company Astronomer has resigned after his affair with the company’s HR director was revealed by the “kiss cam” at a Coldplay concert outside Boston. The incident has been fodder for comedians. — The pilot of a SkyWest passenger jet said he had to make an aggressive move Friday to avoid colliding with an Air Force B-52 bomber while on approach for landing in North Dakota. The bomber had been completing at flyover at the North Dakota State Fair.

BELOW THE FOLD: Political correctness and ethnic sensitivity are not strong suits for Donald Trump. Yesterday he called upon the owners of the Washington Commanders football team and the Cleveland Guardians baseball franchise to return to their original names, the Redskins and the Indians.

He’s even threatening to hold up a Washington stadium deal if the Commanders don’t revert to their original name,.

Both teams changed their names under pressure that they were insulting to native Americans. Trump posted on his Truth Social that; “Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago.”

Take that claim with a grain of Trump. It was the native American groups that campaigned for name changes. But how about the “Washington Orangeskins”?

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
