The “Big Bill” Keeps Moving

THE BIG VOTE: The Senate is preparing to vote on President Trump’s domestic policy and spending bill, his “Big Beautiful Bill that would change life for millions of Americans both rich and poor and add a projected $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years.

The Senate version of the bill adds nearly $1trillion dollars in debt to the House version, and with further cuts and adjustments, the real cost is more like $4.5 trillion, spurring a group of hard-right Republicans to hold out their approval and endanger passage of the bill. To offset some of that, Republicans have also proposed deep cuts to Medicaid, resulting in the loss of health insurance for 11.8 million Americans by 2034 as federal spending on Medicaid, Medicare, and Obamacare is reduced by roughly $1.1 trillion.

The bill extends nearly $4 trillion in tax cuts first passed in 2017. Sen. Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina Republican and chairman of the Budget Committee said, “We are going to make the tax cuts permanent so your taxes do not go up in December.”

Former Trump whisperer Elon Musk declared on his Twitter/X account, “The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country.”

Debate opened yesterday and the Democrats forced the reading of the entire 940-page bill to delay the vote. It took 16 hours.

Despite what they might really think, it’s dangerous for Republicans to oppose the will of Donald Trump. Senator Thom Tillis, the Republican of North Carolina, voted against bringing the bill to the floor and Trump immediately said he would support a primary candidate against Tillis next year. Tillis then announced that he would not run. He said on the floor that the bill was a betrayal of the president’s promise to protect Medicaid and warned that his party was “about to make a mistake.”

BIG: The big bill’s tax cuts would cost the government about $4.5 trillion.

To balance that, the current version would cut, among other things:

  • $1 trillion for Medicaid
  • $500 billion for green energy/environment
  • $400 billion in student loans
  • $250 billion in food benefits

  BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

— Canada announced that it will cancel its tax on American tech companies that caused President Trump to say that he’s stopping all trade negotiations between the two countries.

— The Justice Department announced plans to pursue stripping citizenship from naturalized US citizens who commit certain serious crimes. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate wrote in a memo that pursuing denaturalization will be among the agency’s top five enforcement priorities for the civil rights division.

Denaturalization was used during the McCarthy era of the late 1940’s and the early 50’s but has also been used under presidents both Republican and Democrat. It’s meant to strip citizenship from those who lied on their citizenship applications about their criminal convictions or membership in illegal groups like the Nazi party, or communists during McCarthyism.

BILLIONAIRE BAN: Zohran Mamdani, the upstart Democrat who campaigned for mayor on the theme of making New York City more affordable, said yesterday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that, “I don’t think we should have billionaires.” Mamdani is likely to be the Democratic nominee for mayor.

Mamdani identifies himself as a democratic socialist who would, among other things, freeze rents in New York City and make it free to ride the buses. He also says he wants a $30 minimum wage and a city-owned grocery store in every borough

He said he’s already preparing for attacks by President Trump saying, “I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the President will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am — ultimately because he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for.”

Mamdani, who is Muslim and a big supporter of the Palestinian cause, is fighting accusations of being antisemitic in a city with the world’s largest Jewish population. He said he looks forward to working “with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is fairer for all of them.”

THE SPIN RACK:  Two firefighters responding to a woodland fire in the panhandle of Idaho were shot and killed yesterday by a sniper in what the local sheriff described as a “total ambush.” Law enforcement traded shots with the gunman who was later found dead with a firearm by his side. — Two young people were shot near New York’s historic Stonewall Inn following the city’s Pride Parade earlier in the day. A 16-year-old girl was in critical condition and a 17-year-old girl was in stable condition, police said. — Jurors could begin deliberations today in the trial of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. – An unusual number of heat warning have been issued across France as well as in parts of other countries including Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, the UK and Balkan countries including Croatia.

BELOW THE FOLD: The homeless problem has been solved. Celebutante heiress Paris Hilton and her husband, who lost their Los Angeles home in the Palisades fire, have bought a 30,000 square foot mansion for $63.1 million in the Beverly Park section of the city.  So, you can stop feeling sorry for them.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
