Intel Says Nuke Sites Not “Obliterated”

THE WAR ROOM: Iran’s nuclear program was not “obliterated” as President Trump claimed after last week’s US bombing, according to an assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency, summaries of which were leaked to the press.

  News outlets are reporting that a classified intelligence assessment estimates that the bombing set back Iran’s nuclear development by six months at the most. The NY Times reports according to official sources that the bombing sealed off the entrances to two of the facilities but did not collapse their underground buildings.

  The report also said much of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium was moved before the strikes, which destroyed little of the nuclear material. Although it’s only a preliminary assessment, the report by the Defense Intelligence Agency indicates that the nuclear sites were not damaged as much as some administration officials had hoped … and certainly not as much as Donald Trump claims.

  Trum called the leakers “scum” and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued an angry response. “This alleged assessment is flat-out wrong and was classified as ‘top secret’ but was still leaked to CNN by an anonymous, low-level loser in the intelligence community,” Leavitt said in a statement. In Trump world, anything the President says is true, even when it’s not. Leavitt went on, “The leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program.”

  Leavitt said, “Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000 pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration.” Actually, they don’t know because it’s the first tine bunker busters have been used no one from US intelligence has visited the damage. 

  In other war news, following a shaky start and President Trump berating the leaders of both countries, the ceasefire between Israel and Iran appears to be holding.

  Trump congratulated himself with a social media post saying; “Both Israel and Iran wanted to stop the War, equally! It was my great honor to Destroy All Nuclear facilities & capability, and then, STOP THE WAR!”

JUSTICE TRUMPED:  The Justice Department lawyer who was fired for admitting that the immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia was wrongly deported to El Salvador filed a lengthy whistle-blower complaint charging that a senior DOJ official, Emil Bove III, told subordinates he was willing to ignore court orders to fulfill the president’s deportation campaign. 

  The account by Erez Reuveni says Bove and other top law enforcement officials expressed willingness to stonewall judges or lie to them to get their way. The complaint was filed yesterday and Bove is scheduled to testify today before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a nomination to a federal appeals court.

  Reuveni’s complaint says, “What has not been reported to date are Mr. Reuveni’s attempts over the course of three weeks and affecting three separate cases to secure the government’s compliance with court orders, and his resistance to the internal efforts of DOJ and White House leadership to defy them through lack of candor, deliberate delay, and disinformation .” It goes on, “  Mr. Reuveni tried to do so and was thwarted, threatened, fired, and publicly disparaged for both doing his job and telling the truth to the court.”

  The complaint says that during a meeting discussing deportation flights: “Bove then made a remark concerning the possibility that a court order would enjoin those removals before they could be effectuated. Bove stated that DOJ would need to consider telling the courts ‘fuck you’ and ignore any such court order. Mr. Reuveni perceived that others in the room looked stunned, and he observed awkward, nervous glances among people in the room. Silence overtook the room. Mr. Reuveni and others were quickly ushered out of the room.” 

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: 

— A federal appeals court ordered Trump officials to “facilitate the return” of another a 31-year-old Salvadoran man who was deported to his home country last month, just minutes after the court expressly barred his removal. It was the fourth time in recent months that judges directed the administration to seek the return of immigrants expelled from the country either by mistake or in violation of court orders. 

 The Trump administration went back to the Supreme Court in the case of eight men they want to deport to South Sudan. They’re in a battle with the courts over whether they can deport people to a country in which they were never citizens. 

NUYAWK MAYAH: The relatively unknown Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old New York state assemblyman, defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary to run for mayor of New York City. With the results still not final, Cuomo conceded.

  Mamdani is a democratic socialist who has campaigned about the crisis of affordable living in New York. Because Mamdani did not win more than 50 percent of the vote, the final outcome will be determined by ranked choice voting.

  The fall election could be a free-for-all with incumbent Mayor Eric Adams running as an independent and Cuomo possibly doing the same.

THE OBIT PAGE: Bobby Sherman, the boyishly handsome actor and singer who became a pop-music star and teen idol in the late 1960s, has died at age 81.

  Sherman was 25 when he was cast in the comedy western ABC series “Here Come the Brides,” playing a bashful 19th-century Seattle lumberjack. 

   As a recording artist Sherman had four top ten singles in 1969 and 70, including his first hit, “Little Woman.” His sing-song style of music did not hold up over time, but he worked as an actor into the 1980s.

THE SPIN RACK: As the climate warms, the risk of sleep apnea overnight increases by almost 50 percent when it’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer, according to study  published in the journal Nature Communications.
