Supremes Side with Trump … for Now

Vol. 14, No. 2343
Trump’s Great Day: The Trump administration won two big immigration arguments before the Supreme Court — at least temporarily — as the court ruled that the government can legally use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport suspected Venezuelan gang members to prison in El Salvador. But the court also said the case against the government actions should have been brought in Texas, where the migrants had been held, rather than Washington.
President Trump posted that it’s “A GREAT DAY FOR JUSTICE IN AMERICA!”
Significantly, though, the court ruled that the deportees have a right to due process, which they did not get, and the immediate remedy is for them to file their lawsuits in Texas. The justices did not rule on whether the administration properly categorized the Venezuelans as deportable under the Alien Enemies Act.
Chief Justice John Roberts also issued a temporary block on a trial judge’s order for the administration by midnight last night to bring back a Salvadoran migrant wrongly sent to that prison in El Salvador. Roberts wants the court to have more time with the issue.
Despite admitting that Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia was wrongly deported, the Trump administration refuses to make any effort to get him back. They’ve argued that Garcia is out of their jurisdiction and a federal judge has no say in the matter. They won’t even pick up the phone and say, “We made a mistake, we want him back.”
TICKER SHOCK: As the stock markets continued to slide because of his import tariffs, President Trump threatened China with additional tariffs of as much as 50 percent if they do not remove their own retaliatory tariff of 34 percent on US goods. That would bring the tariff on Chinese goods to 104 percent.
China’s Commerce Ministry responded in a statement saying Trump’s threat “once again exposes the blackmailing nature of the US.”
Trump ranted on his Truth Social feed about Chinese “record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation.”
The White House clams that 70 countries have been on the phone looking to negotiate tariffs. Trump declared he’s going to get fair deals from every country and “if we don’t we’re going to have nothing to do with them.”
Stocks had a roller coaster day because of the tariffs, but finished only slightly below their Friday closing. In a telling moment, prices shot upwards following a false report that Trump was backing off his tariffs.
In response to the market panic as millions of Americans have lost trillions of dollars in value, Trump posted on his Truth Social; “Don’t be Weak! Don’t be Stupid! Don’t be a PANICAN (A new party based on Weak and Stupid people!).”
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE:
— Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. yesterday called for states to stop the fluoridation of public water and end what has been considered one of the most successful public health initiatives in US history. Fluoride in water has proven to be crucial in preventing tooth decay.
“It makes no sense to have it in our water supply,” Kennedy said, speaking in Salt Lake City, Utah. “I’m very, very proud of this state for being the first state to ban it, and I hope many more will come.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which now answers to Kennedy, has listed fluoridation as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.
Kennedy has claimed without proof that, “Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease.”
THE WAR ROOM: The Palestinian Red Crescent … their version of the Red Cross … accused Israel of a war crime in the killing of 15 emergency responders at dawn on March 23rd.
The Israeli military admits killing the 15 but says that a “preliminary inquiry indicated that the troops opened fire due to a perceived threat following a previous encounter in the area.” They said that six of those killed “were identified as Hamas terrorists,” but cited no evidence.
Israel initially said that several vehicles were “advancing suspiciously” toward their troops “without headlights or emergency signals,” but video of the incident proves that to be an outright lie. Video taken by one of the men who was killed shows four vehicles with headlights on and emergency lights flashing. One man who gets out before the shooting starts is wearing reflective emergency gear.
As shooting breaks out a man’s voice is heard repeatedly saying, “There is no god but god,” until he goes silent and the gunfire continues for five minutes.
IT’S REAL: The May 7th federal deadline for obtaining what they call “Real ID” to be able to fly on an airliner is fast approaching.
Airline passengers will be required to present REAL ID, a license with a star or flag on it, or a passport. People have been swamping DMV offices to get upgraded licenses. There may be some grace period for fliers after May 7th, but under the current White House regime don’t bet your ticket on it.
THE OBIT PAGE: Jay North, who was only 6 when he was cast to play the mischievous Dennis the Menace in 1959 for the television adaptation of Hank Ketcham’s cartoon strip, has died at age 73 at home in Florida. He had colon cancer.
HOOP DREAMS: The Florida Gators came from 12 points behind Houston last night to win the NCAA basketball tournament 65-63. Until the last few minutes, Florida had held the lead for only 17 seconds.
BELOW THE FOLD: While some Republicans claim that Americans are not having enough babies, a pair of 100-year-old Galapagos island tortoises at the Philadelphia Zoo have become parents for the first time. The four babies each weighed about as much as a chicken egg when they broke out of their shells.
