NSA Holds Trump Info, Stripped of Title

Brazen and Unlawful: The CIA and National Security Agency are withholding information about Ukraine out of fear of angering the president, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff said yesterday. He’s the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the lead House impeachment manager.
“The NSA in particular is withholding what are potentially relevant documents to our oversight responsibilities on Ukraine, but also withholding documents potentially relevant that the senators might want to see during the trial,” Schiff said on ABC’s “This Week.”
More legal briefs are expected today in the Trump impeachment trial, which formally begins tomorrow.
In a six-page memo released over the weekend, President Trump’s lawyers say the impeachment and Senate trial is a “brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election.”
Trump’s lawyers say that the articles of impeachment fail to list any actual crime the President committed, let alone “high crimes and misdemeanors” as laid out in the Constitution.
The constitution is vague on the subject, but it’s 18th Century language that doesn’t explain what “high crimes” means. For one thing, there was no federal criminal code at the time.
Trump’s lawyers said in the memo that the “abuse of power” charge in Article I would do lasting damage to the separation of powers established in the Constitution. They say Trump did nothing wrong in the infamous July 25th phone call with the president of Ukraine while ignoring the larger set of facts proving that the call was only part of a campaign to get Ukraine to investigate Vice President Joe Biden.
The lawyers also say Article II — obstruction of Congress — must be rejected because Trump released what has incorrectly described as a transcript of the July 25th phone call. While a summary memo was released, Trump also claimed executive privilege blocking key witnesses, among them his Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
Executive privilege still needs some definition by the Supreme Court, but one thing it can’t be used for is covering your own crimes and misdeeds.
The House managers who will be prosecuting Trump’s case say his behavior is the “framers’ worst nightmare.”
The Bowdler Report: Tens of thousands of people showed up across the country for the fourth annual Women’s March.
Funny thing about that. A large color photograph of the crowd in the first Women’s March has been removed from the entry to the National Archives after The Washington Post pointed out that it was suspiciously altered.
The picture was of the crowd on Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated. Called out by the Post, the better minds at the archives admitted that the picture was altered to blur signs critical of Trump. Words that referenced women’s intimate anatomy also were blurred.
A comparison to the original print reveals that a placard that says “God Hates Trump” has “Trump” blotted out so it reads “God Hates.” A sign that reads “Trump & GOP — Hands Off Women” has the name Trump blurred out.
An archives spokeswoman said, “We blurred references to the President’s name on some posters so as not to engage in current political controversy.”
And to alter the historical record.
The Bulletin Board: Sixty members of a Bolivian drug cartel escaped from a prison in Paraguay through a tunnel. They had help from the guards. — Virginia is bracing today for a giant gun rights demonstration to be held at the capital in Richmond. Guns have been banned for the event. — A tenant facing eviction in Honolulu stabbed his landlord, killed two police officers and set his home on fire, eventually burning down six other houses. The 69-year-old gunman and two women with him in the home have not been accounted for.
The 50-year Line: The Kansas City Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. The Chiefs thumped the Tennessee Titans 35-24 yesterday. For a while, the Chiefs were down by double digits. They haven’t played in – or won — a Super Bowl since 1970.
San Francisco eliminated Green Bay 37-20 to complete the matchup for Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 in Miami Gardens, Fla.,
The Royal Formerly Known as Prince: The price of privacy for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is that they will have to give up their royal titles. No more “Royal Highness.”
It seems odd. You are either a royal or you aren’t, but it seems the family thinks of the title more as “marketing manager.”
A statement from Buckingham Palace says Harry will have to give up his military appointment, which seems wrong because he served in war, and the couple will have to repay the Sovereign Grant funds they spent on renovating their residence, Frogmore Cottage. About $3 million.
The Queen said in a statement, “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family,” she said. “I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”
Book Section: President Trump has issued a review of the new book “A Very table Genius,” about his chaotic leadership: “Another Fake Book by two third rate Washington Post reporters, has already proven to be inaccurately reported, to their great embarrassment, all for the purpose of demeaning and belittling a President who is getting great things done for our Country, at a record clip. Thank you!”
