Vol.2, No. 25
Guns: Sen. Diane Feinstein of California says that today she will introduce a bill to ban 157 types of semi-automatic weapons and bullet magazines that hold more than ten rounds. Existing weapons would be grandfathered, although they would have to be registered. Unlike the 1994 assault weapons ban, Feinstein’s new bill would not expire after ten years. This is just one of what could be a spate of gun bills put before Congress.
National: Former C.I.A. agent, John C. Kiriakou today became the first “company” employee sentenced to prison for revealing classified information … 30 months. Kiriakou has told reporters about the use of torture and waterboarding in the war on terror and defended himself as a whistle bower. When Kiriakou declined to say anything before sentencing the judge said, “Perhaps you have already spoken too much.”
- In confirmation hearings to become Secretary of State, Mass. Sen. John Kerry described climate change as a “life threatening issue” and warned that the US needs to find clean sources of energy. As Secretary Kerry will have to weigh in on the 1700 mile Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry Canadian oil considered to be some of the dirtiest on earth.
Chill: Thief River Falls, MN -17, Glens Falls, NY +3, Fall River, Mass. +16
Bad Apple: After announcing $54.5 billion in revenue and records sales of phones and tablets, Apple tanked in the stock market. The stock is down 40% since its peak in September, down 12% on Tuesday alone. Apple profits have gone fat as Samsung rises, causing investors to fear the age of Apple dominance may be fading.
Fake, Set, Match!: Victoria Azarenka of Belarus took a 10-minute “medical” timeout before continuing to defeat American Sloane Stephens in the Australian open, causing questions about the legitimacy of her departure from the court. Azarenka complained of a problem just after being broken at five match points. Such timeouts have been described as the current “thing” among tennis players.
Greetings from Disneyland: The buzz of the Sundance film festival is a movie called “Escape from Tomorrow” shot guerrilla style at Disneyland without permission from The Mouse. Given that the Disney legal department has a daily lunch account bigger than the movie’s budget, it’s not likely to ever see the inside of a theater.
Wired Cigar: Word has arrived that Cuba has high speed Internet service. Cuban authorities sent the announcement over their high-speed Internet service in 2011.
