Tornado, Apple Tax and “Football”

National: Search and rescue crews say everyone seems to be accounted for in the aftermath of the giant Oklahoma tornado. The toll: 24 dead, 240 injured. About 100 were rescued from the rubble. One elementary school was flattened, whole suburban developments blown away, and cars tossed about on highways. The tornado had winds up to 200 mph.
- Apple CEO Tim Cook denied to a Congressional committee that his company avoids paying US taxes. “The way I look at this is that Apple pays 30.5 percent of its profits in taxes in the United States,” he said. “We do have a low tax rate outside the U.S., but this is for products we sell outside the U.S.” Apple leaves billions of dollars in profits outside the country and out of reach of US taxes.
- The Senate Judiciary Committee approved an immigration overhaul. The bill would raise the number of visas for skilled foreign workers but does not include green card status for gay partners, which was opposed by Republicans. Immigration still faces some tough fights on the floor.
- Convicted murder Jodi Arias asked a Phoenix jury to give her life in prison, although she had previously told reporters she preferred death. “Until very recently I could not have imagined standing before you all and asking you to give me life … I thought I would rather die,” she said in court. Arias was convicted for killing her former boyfriend five years ago.
City of Angels: Councilman Eric Garcetti will be the next mayor.
Second Act: Former NY Congressman Anthony Weiner, who Tweeted himself out of office, announced himself a candidate for Mayor of New York in a two-minute video posted online. Weiner’s previously most-famous post was of the Congressional member in his underwear, leading to his exit from office. In his announcement video he said, “Look, I made some big mistakes, and I know I let a lot of people down.”
SportsPage: Major League Soccer is adding a team to New York to be called The New York City Football Club. Manchester City, the British football (soccer) club paid $100 million for the expansion team in a joint venture with the New York Yankees, which is a baseball team and won’t contribute to the confusion between soccer and football. New York City Football will not play the Giants and the Jets because they play football.
- The game of rules has one more. The US Golf Association has made a rule that players may no longer brace their putter against their body when they take the shot. This eliminates the long putter made for holding against the chest as well as a long-standing argument in golf.
