Breaking: Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter born without fibulas and made history running in the Olympics on artificial legs, has been charged with the murder of his model girlfriend at home. Thirty-year-old Reeva Steenkamp died of gunshot wounds. Sometimes known as “Blade Runner” because of his carbon fiber running legs, Pistorius made the semi-final in the 400 meter run in the London Olympics.
National: American Airlines and US Airways have agreed to merge, creating the world’s largest airline. Don’t expect bigger seats.
- Billionaire Warren Buffett is buying Heinz ketchup … all of it.
- Boston Irish crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger is arguing in court that he has immunity from prosecution for 19 murders because he was granted a free pass by the FBI while he was informing on his cross-town rivals in the Mafia. Prosecutors say they don’t have the legal power to sanction murder. Bulger had disappeared for 16 years and was found in 2011 living quietly in a Santa Monica apartment.
- Sports Illustrated is under fire for using ethnic minorities as backdrops for Western models in minimal bikinis in their annual swimsuit edition. The critics seem to be the only people who noticed anyone in the background.
World: Britain’s Scotland Yard has arrested six more journalists suspected of hacking cellphone messages to get information for Rupert Murdoch’s now defunct News Of The World newspaper. More than 100 have been arrested so far, 32 from News Of The World. Investigations have shown that for years reporters hacked the phones of celebrities, athletes, politicians, and even a murdered girl.
Cancelled: Lady Gaga says chronic pain and an injury have forced her to cancel her tour. She has inflammation of the joints and a tear in her hip that will require surgery to repair. Gaga said she’s been playing with pain and it finally got to her.
The Stink Boat: The crippled Carnival Triumph cruise liner is expected to be towed into Mobile, AL. sometime today. Passengers have reported overflowing toilets, foul odors, and long lines for food. Many have slept on deck. And getting 4,000 people out of Mobile will be another logistical feat.
To Go: Trans fats, The Big Gulp and now foam food containers. NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg has put portable foam food containers on his hit list of things that must go in the city. “We can live without it, we may live longer without it, and the doggie bag will survive just fine,” Hizzoner said.
