Skyfall: A “Nor’easter” blizzard dumped up to three feet of snow in parts of Connecticut and more than two feet in other New England states. Milford, Ct., 38 inches, Worcester, Ma., 28 and Gorham, Me., 28. At least 660,000 customers are without power and the USPS has cancelled mail delivery. About 5300 flights have been cancelled as major airports in NY and Boston are closed. Expect CNN reporters to be standing outside in their red jackets for the rest of the day.
National: Former Chicago Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. has agreed to plead guilty to misuse of campaign funds. A judge will decide whether to send Jackson to jail, and if so, for how long. Jackson agreed to repay hundreds of thousands of dollars, including money used to decorate his home and $40,000 for a Rolex given to a female friend. Jackson’s wife, a former Chicago alderman, is the target of a similar investigation.
- An Amish sect leader convicted of directing beard-cutting attacks on fellow Amish has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The Amish believe God instructs men to grow a beard after they marry and cutting another man’s beard is a great insult. Prosecutors said Samuel Mullet, Sr. ordered five beard cuttings to retaliate against men who resisted his authoritarian style.
- First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to attend the funeral today of a Chicago high school girl gunned down in random gang violence. The girl, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, was a drum majorette and honor student who appeared in inauguration festivities last month.
- Police in Southern California are still searching for a former Los Angeles cop wanted in the murders of a young engaged couple and a Riverside police officer. A search among mountain cabins around Big Bear Lake was hampered by heavy snow.
World: The 15-year-old Pakistini girl shot by the Taliban for advocating education has been released from a British hospital. Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head last October. Her release came only six days after surgeons replaced part of her skull.
- After first declining to resign, the German education minister, Annette Schavan, who was found to have plagiarized part of her doctoral thesis has called it quits. She denies the plagiarism.
What Would Jesus Tweet?: In response to being on the cover of Time Magazine titled “The Republican Savior”, Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted, “There is only one savior, and it is not me. #Jesus.” Sources close to the pew say #Jesus is undecided about forming an exploration committee.
