Vol.2, No. 166
Gas, Gas, Gas: The Obama administration has decided to send weapons to Syrian rebels after a finding by the US, Britain and France that the Syrian military used chemical weapons against rebel forces. Up to 150 people were killed in chemical attacks, according to the assessment. President Obama has said the use of such weapons is a “red line” and the decision to send arms comes at a time when the rebels are reeling from the loss of the strategic city of Qusayr.
The Supremes: The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that natural human genes may not be patented. This countermands 30 years of government rulings. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority that, “a naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated.” The court ruled that synthetic genes can still be patented, which is a significant win for biotech companies.
National: Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says he will not sign off on an immigration bill that accommodates gay couples. Rubio said in an interview, “If this bill has something in it that gives gay couples immigration rights and so forth, it kills the bill. I’m done.”
- One person is dead and at least 73 injured in an explosion yesterday morning at a chemical plant between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
- The Black Forest fire outside Colorado Springs has caused two deaths and burned 379 homes, making it the most destructive fire in the history of Colorado. So far it has burned 15,000 acres, with no sign of relief.
World: The Turkish government is suspending development of a popular park, a project that has caused riots, until a court ruling on the issue.
Birthday Suit: A New York production company planning a documentary about the song “Happy Birthday” filed a lawsuit to break the 110-year old copyright on the song and put it in the public domain.
Mogul Ankles Bed!: Tabloid news titan Rupert Murdoch filed for divorce after 14 years from his Chinese-born wife Wendi Deng. She is the 82-year-old Murdoch’s third wife and the couple has two children. Murdoch is the second man who left a wife to marry Deng. Yale educated, smart, fierce, and very attractive, Deng famously once attacked a man throwing a cream pie at Rupert. Our sources familiar with the couple say they saw it coming, but failed to notify this page of the pending split.
The Roundup: Sarah Palin returns to Fox News as a commentator; Lindsay Lohan has switched rehab facilities; Achy Breaky Billy Ray Cyrus and wife Tish, parents of Miley, are pulling a Murdoch; and the girlfriend of NSA secrets leaker Edward Snowden is a pole dancer.
