Zimmerman Walks, Monteith Dead

National: Demonstrations in Florida and across the country were mostly peaceful overnight after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of the unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. About 100 protesters in Oakland, Ca. broke windows and vandalized a police car. Robert Zimmerman, who has been the family spokesman, said his brother George will be looking over his shoulder for a long time.

The six-woman Florida jury found the former neighborhood watch captain not guilty of any crime after 16 hours of deliberations. Outrage over the Zimmerman case is being fed by the case of a Jacksonville, Fla. woman who was sentenced to 20 years in prison recently for firing a warning shot to scare off her abusive husband. Marissa Alexander, who is black, claimed justification under Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

Hollywood: Cory Monteith, 31, a star of the hit TV show “Glee”, was found dead by staff in a Vancouver hotel room. Police said there is no indication of foul play. Monteith had been in re-hab for drug use in April.

World: Seven UN peacekeepers were killed and 17 injured in an attack in the Darfur region of Sudan. The peacekeepers, all from Tanzania, were on patrol not far from their base when they were attacked with gunfire and rocket propelled grenades.

Investigators say there is no link between the fire on board a parked 787 Dreamliner and its batteries, but the cause has not been determined. The jet has had a history of overheating battery packs.

The Diamond: After missing 91 games recovering from a broken ankle, NY Yankees slugger Derek Jeter was injured in his first outing Thursday night against Kansas City. He’s now sitting out with a pulled quadriceps.

The Gavel: The Iowa Supreme Court ruled this week that a dentist did nothing wrong when he fired his long-time assistant for being too attractive. Dr. James Knight said he fired Melissa Nelson because he was afraid he might start an affair with her. The all male court ruled that Knight acted on feelings and emotion rather than sexual discrimination.

The Obit Page: Amar Bose, the audio engineer who changed the sound of sound with his Wave Radio and noise cancelling headphones, has died at age 83. Back in the 1960s Bose realized that sound is better when it bounces off walls and his first stereo speakers were designed to do just that. He became an innovative and independent billionaire who never took his company public. Bose liked being able to do what he wanted without answering to stockholders. He once said, “I would have been fired a hundred times at a company run by MBAs.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
