Woman Accuses Hastert, Triple Crown Run

Mr. Speaker: A Montana woman told ABC News yesterday that her brother was sexually abused by former House Speaker Dennis Hastert back in the 1970s when the retired politician was a wrestling coach at a suburban Chicago high school.

Jolene Reinboldt Burdge said that back in the 1970s Hastert had a relationship with her late brother Stephen, who was an equipment manager at the time. Burdge said her brother, who died of AIDS, told her that his first sexual experience was with Hastert and, “Who is ever going to believe me?”

Burdge told ABC the same story 10 years ago but declined to go on the record and the story never made air.

Hastert has been indicted on charges that he violated currency laws to cover up hundreds of thousand of dollars in payments to a man for “prior misconduct.”

On the Job: Employers added a healthy 280,000 jobs in May, allaying fears of a softening economy. A slight uptick in the unemployment rate to 5.5 percent is attributed to a rise in the number of people looking for work.

Collection Plate: Minnesota prosecutors have filed criminal charges against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, accusing the church of failing to protect children from sexually predatory priests. Each of the six misdemeanor charges carries a $3,000 fine. The charges accuse the archdiocese of a “pattern of behavior” to ignore and cover up sexual abuse.

World: Saudi Arabia says it has shot down a Scud missile fired from across the border by Houthi rebels in Yemen. It was intercepted by a Patriot missile battery. The Scud is an old and notoriously inaccurate weapon, but it can hurt when it hits something.

>The death toll in the Yangtze River ship disaster now stands at 396 with more than 40 people still missing. Recovery teams have managed to right the ship and are searching the compartments.

Nation: President Barack Obama is expected to deliver the eulogy today at the funeral of former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden. Both Obamas will be there as well as President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary. Beau Biden, 46, died of brain cancer. There’s been an outpouring of sympathy for the well-liked Joe Biden, who lost his first wife and a daughter in a car accident.

The Obit Page: Former Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz, the cigar-smoking world spokesman for the dictator Saddam Hussein, has died in a hospital after being transferred there from prison. Aziz could be frustrating to world leaders, but not always wrong. He said the American claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction was an “invented scenario” and a “bad American movie.”

Post Time: The majestic colt American Pharoah takes a run today at winning horse racing’s Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes in New York. It’s a small field of just eight horses. At 1-½ miles Belmont is the longest of the three Triple Crown, and a test of endurance for a horse that’s already run the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. No horse has won the Triple Crown since 1978.

Disneyfication: New York’s Times Square used to be a thrillingly dangerous place populated with pimps, pushers, hookers, and thieves. It’s still dangerous. Yesterday a Minnie Mouse impersonator duked it out with a Hello Kitty enactor over a tip after having their picture taken together. Kitty refused to share with Minnie. Witnesses said the fight was so vicious even Spiderman couldn’t break it up.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
