Weapons Agreement, Mumbai Collapse

ChemWeps: The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, including Russia and the US, have agreed on a resolution to require Syria to give up its chemical weapons. Because of Russian objections, the resolution will not include a threat of force if Syria fails to turn them over for destruction. But the UN could make a separate decision to use force.

Collapse: An apartment building that was home to about 100 people collapsed early this morning in Mumbai. Dozens are believed trapped.

Hunted: Interpol has issued an alert for a British woman nicknamed “the white widow”, a person of interest in the assault on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi. Samantha Lewthwaite, 29, is a Muslim convert whose first husband was a suicide bomber in the 2005 London transit system bombings that killed 52 people. Some witnesses said a white woman was seen in the Westgate attack, but that has not been confirmed. Interpol says she’s wanted for other crimes.

Shutdown Countdown: Shutdown minus 3. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the only thing missing in Republican demands to keep the government running is a “birther bill”. Republicans are insisting on more spending cuts, approval of the Keystone oil pipeline, and a one year delay in implementing Obamacare. The healthcare insurance exchanges, where people can comparison shop for medical coverage will open on time Tuesday, Oct. 1, even if the government shuts down, according to The White House.

Runner: Wendy Davis, the Texas state senator who filibustered anti-abortion legislation in pink running shoes, will run for governor, according to the Associated Press. The AP reports that the Democrat’s official announcement will come next week. Virtually unknown outside Texas, Davis sprinted to national fame with her losing filibuster. We’re betting that somehow pink running shoes will figure into the campaign.

Jewel Heights: A French mountain climber on Mt. Blanc found a metal box full of precious gems worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. They are believed to have come from one of two Air India crashes in 1950 and 1966.

Nevermind: The Randolph County, N.C. school board voted to rescind its decision to remove Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man from the school libraries. The book about racism is 19th on the Modern Library list of 100 greatest novels of the 20th Century. One board member who voted for the original ban because of its language and content said, “we may have made a mistake, but at least we’re big enough to admit it.’’

Error Code 22: Microsoft mogul Bill Gates admitted in an appearance at Harvard that the infamous “control-alt-delete” combination of keystrokes on a PC was “a mistake”. The strokes were originally programmed to reboot a computer, but became the way to access the login screen. Gates said, “We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn’t wanna give us our single button.”
