Waiting to Pull the Trigger, The Horse Race

The Brexit Door: The British pound fell another three percent against the dollar when markets opened this morning and the fallout continued from the British vote to leave the European Union. The British stock market was down nearly 100 points and futures on the Dow Jones also were down 100.

Politicians are throwing around the figure that Americans have lost $100 billion from their 401K retirement accounts.

Britain is also waking up to the reality that no one has a plan for how the country will leave the European Union. A prominent conservative Member of Parliament told Sky News, “There is no plan. The Leave campaign don’t have a post-Brexit plan.” Evidently the Leavers don’t have grammar books either.

While Europe raps its fingers on the desk waiting for the Brits to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, triggering a two-year exit, no one is reaching for a pen, and evidently they aren’t taking questions either. The Economist’s “Bagehot” column says that “at the top of British politics, a vacuum yawns wide. The phones are ringing, but no one is picking up.”

Both the Conservative Party, which holds the majority now, and the Labour Party, are in turmoil over failure to fight off the vote to leave the EU.

Little discussed in all the noise is that the referendum is not binding. It’s not law. It’s a very expensive opinion poll. No major British politician has stepped up to say, “We really don’t have to do this.” Some EU officials are beginning to doubt whether they ever will.

The Horse Race: A new Washington Post/ABC News poll has Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump 51 to 39 percent in a general election. Clinton leads by an astounding 77 to 15 percent among non-white voters.

The Wall Street Journal poll has Clinton up 46 to 41 percent.

In the ABC/WashPo poll, almost a third of Republican and Republican-leaning voters said that Trump is unqualified for office. But senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, who ought to know by now who’s qualified to be president, won’t give an opinion on that. On ABC’s “This Week” he said, “Look, that will be up to the American people to decide.”

Trump advisor Paul Manafort, who won the Game of Thrones sword fight to be the “Hand” to Donald Trump, denied on NBC that the Trump campaign is in any serious trouble, despite being poor and poorly organized. Manafort actually said, “We have a candidate who doesn’t need to figure out what’s going on in order to say what he wants to do.”

Nation: Seven people were taken to the hospital with stab wounds in Sacramento, Calif. yesterday after a clash between Neo-Nazi skinheads and counter-demonstrators. An estimated 150 protesters forced about 25 neo-Nazis to leave. When the two groups met they almost immediately attacked each other. — West Virginia is digging out after weekend flash floods that damaged and washed away hundreds of homes. More rain is expected. — The Supreme Court is expected to rule today on the Texas law that forced the closing of almost all abortion clinics in that state.

Red Card: Argentina’s Lionel Messi, considered the best soccer player in the world, said he will likely retire from the national team after missing a penalty kick that lost the Copa America final to Chile. “This is tough and a difficult time,” Messi, said later. “The first thing that comes to my mind and that I have thought is that the end has come for me and our team.”

Civility in Paradise: The rapper 50 Cent was arrested for using profanity during a performance on the island of St. Kitts. 50 Cent had been warned ahead of the show and ignored it. St. Kitts doesn’t like profanity in public but it’s okay to go to the beach nearly naked.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
